Rt.12 tunnels eastbound into Bryce Canyon, UT

When taking Rt.12 EASTBOUND into the Bryce Canyon area, there are two small tunnels in Red Canyon that are listed as 13'6" tall. Our 2011 Montana tops out at 13'9" with the second A/C unit on top. Using Street View in Google Maps, it appears that maybe the posted height is at the outside edges of the tunnels and if we carefully crossed the centerline and went thru at the highest point, we'd be fine. It's obvious that fifth wheel RVs can get into Bryce, but I'm a very cautious guy when it comes to trip planning and anything that can physically hurt the Monty! Anyone that has taken a taller RV thru there and can offer some guidance would be appreciated.

Tana is about 13' 1" And, we took her down the middle.

That does NOT answer your question, I know.

You may want to call the park to verify this but according to their website vehicles over 13'1" are prohibited

Charlie, I think that is going west?? Into Zion? And, I totally agree, you do NOT want to go there with a Montana.

Bryce:

.

I think, unless I need another pot of coffee that this is one of the tunnels going into Bryce that srclink is referring to:

We took 12 west from Bryce with our rig and had no trouble with tunnels. The Zion tunnels are the ones with restrictions,

Mrs.CountryGuy pictures are right on (there are two of them really close together in Red Canyon, you can barely call them "tunnels"). We are referring to Bryce, not the Rt.9 tunnel in Zion.

Have to say, that at 13' 9" you will not be legal on the PA Turnpike and other places. Believe the accepted height for the most part is 13' 6".

Do NOT doubt your measurement, just pointing out the obvious??

Have you check the web sites for the Bryce National Park and the Red Rock Visitors Center Dixie National Forest? Maybe even call them??

Good luck. It is a gorgeous area. BTW, we hiked at the Dixie Visitors center, and enjoyed it tremendously. You are down IN with the hoodoos. Rather than looking down. It was special!

(Yes, I blogged it.)

It's really tough to get an accurate measurement due to the curved roof and with the A/C unit in the middle of the roof (it's really easy to be off an inch or so plus or minus), but I tried several methods and I finally settled on 13'7" as the most likely. I mentally add a couple inches just to be sure when I'm checking low clearances. Don't want to scrape off an A/C unit just because I'm not paying attention. Was going to call Red Canyon Visitors Center, but they don't open until April and I didn't want to wait that long if the Forum can provide some answers.

Understand.

It has been ages since we measured, but my leaky memory banks tell me that hubby (CountryGuy) took a 8 foot 2X4 up top, laid it out at the highest point. Some how he got it level?? Had a string attached, tossed it over the side, I marked where it hit the ground. Brought the contraption, err, 2X4 down and we measured the string. Seems we did more than once too!

Seems to me, I have seen laser toys that will measure stuff like this too, or possibly, that is a figment of my imagination?? Could be.

Or you could try to gain entrance to the PA turnpike where they have red lights/lasers that buzz off if you are taller than 13' 6". That'll tell ya right quick, eh??

Hopefully someone else with a unit taller than our Tana will happen along to answer your question in the manner you hope. With first hand experience. Good luck and have fun in Bryce. We got snowed out 2 to 4 times in early May. What a great experience.

The fact about the PA turnpike is of interest -
our 2015 travels are back home to Pennsylvania.

There is only one sure way to obtain your max height, and that is to actually measure it while hooked up to your TV. I am sure my height is different on my 3725RL than PackerFan, CaptJoe, and others because we have different TV's. For me the only accurate way is to use at least a 4' level from the highest point on top, level across to the side so you can drop a tape measure down to the ground where someone else can read the distance. You can use a 2x4 or something else to hold out there but just being a little bit off level could mess up you true measurement by an inch or more.

Note to everyone...I did measure the Monty when I first got it while hooked up to the truck using a level just like others have suggested. I'm not questioning how to measure, I'm asking whether anyone with the second (i.e. forward mounted) A/C unit has successfully gone under the two stone 13'6" arches in Red Canyon. Thanks.

If I read those height restrictions correctly, the 13'6" is for the truck NOT the trailer.

We traveled thru Red Canyon on Highway 12 last fall with our 3725RL--going thru both tunnels east and west bound--no problems and we have a front AC that is not one of the slim profile types. Since my rig info is in the Monty that is in storage--I can't quote our measured height--but I have measured it several times.

We also have front and rear air, and went through with no problem, east to west.

Another note on Rt 12. Last fall we stayed at the KOA in Cannonville--it was very nice with a great staff. The location worked great for us. Also we drove the Grand Staircase Escalante--that is Rt 12 heading to Capital Reef NP. We did not drive this road with the Monty--lots of twists and turns, uphill, downhill--But a great trip in the Truck also great views and lots of little towns and places to stop for coffee or a snack.
At Bryce NP--if they have a Star Party--don't miss it--great star viewing with their telescopes--hope there is no moon that night as it was on the night we were there.

We towed our 34' Fifth-wheel along Utah 12 from Bryce to Capitol Reef and it became one of our favorite drives in the country. We never experienced it as a problem, and have highly recommened it to others.

Here is a view along that road: (other views are in the NEXT and PREVIOUS links)
