Rio Grande valley

Throwing darts at an area around Pharr, Alamo, Donna Texas, for a Jan. thru March winter stay. Enjoy music and ethnic dance and elderhostel programs. Would enjoy hearing others experiences and references about RV resorts in that area. Thanks

As "Winter Texans", and proud of it, we love the area. There are many fine parks in that area.

There are a bunch of us MOC'ers that gather the 3rd Thursday of every month and have lunch, jabber, talk, share, laugh and have fun!! we post that info under the RGV area on this forum, camping clubs.

I am unaware of any elderhostel programs, but, that might be interesting, if you find something, please post it.

We are treated well, we love the Mexican food and culture, there are programs at many of the campgrounds, musical and such, usually small fees. Most campgrounds have so many activities planned you could not do them all. Some have LOADS more, some have less.

Go to one of the camp ground books, and study the ratings and accommodations. Pick one that suits YOUR needs.

We prefer, no demand, concrete or blacktop pads, no grass. If it rains even a little down there, it turns immediately to mud. (and this is MY opinion, not a slam on other MOCers that choose otherwise, each to his own, ok?? )

Be prepared for WIND. It is part of the total package, you will love it, hate it, or put up with it. It keeps away the bugs and keeps ya comfy. It also rattles awnings, and blows dust in open windows. Again, comes with the territory, love it, hate it.

There are some great museums, up and down the RGV, a world class zoo in Brownsville, South Padre Island, birding, birding and more birding.

If you wanna be busy you can be, if you wanna be lazy, you can do that too!

Have a great time, and hope to see you at one of the Thursday luncheons.

We have stayed a couple of times at Victoria Palms in Donna. Nice place with lots to do. The company that owns the park has 3 or 4 other parks in the area, but I don't remember all the names. Alamo Palms in Alamo is one of them and it looked like a nice place. Both have older areas that are a little crowded and newer areas that have more room. I would avoid the older area at Victoria Palms as the voltage was poor.

We have two Habitat for Humanity builds in Texas this winter and we may get down to the valley in February, but have not made reservations yet.

Good luck, there is a lot to choose from down there.

We begin full timing on Dec 1 and are leisurely heading to Llano Grande Lake Resort in Mercedes till March 1. Highly recommended by some friends but it is a bit pricey. Jesse

Llano Grande and Victoria Palms, owned by same man/company. Stayed in both, both pricy, but very nice, very very resorty.

Ditto mobrownies comments bout staying out of the older sections of these parks, sites are small in the older sections and quite large in the newer sections.

If you have animals, as in dogs, check their rules and regs before registering. A few years ago, VP told us they were going to limit the number of pets per site. Not sure if that was ever enacted.

VP has the nicest pool we have seen in our years in the RGV, if you like to swim laps, this is the place to do it. Many of the other parks have small pools.
