Stupid mistake

I pulled out yesterday, and forget to put my tailgate up and destroyed one of the storage doors. I have found a couple of web sites that sell replacements. BUT, fits have to be pretty exact. Other than trying Keystone to see if they know by vin, does anyone know the proper way to measure the door when ordering, ie the cutout in the wall itself for the door, the outside of the door frame, the inside molding that screws into the sidewall?

Don't feel bad, I know I would eventually do that also. When the V tailgate arguments starts that's why I have a V. Hope it's not too much trouble to get the right door!

I know the feeling. About 10 months after we got our MH, I was pulling into a park we visit two three times a year. Don't know what I was doing or thinking, but I managed to cut a corner too closely and had a disagreement with a 6 x 6 imbedded in concrete. I ruined two basement doors and did some body damage...to the tune of $2,800.

There are two kinds of people that pull fifth wheel trailers, those that have left the tailgate down and those that are going to. What is worse is when you leave it up and tear up the tailgate. I am planning on making a "V" this winter if I stay over at my sisters place. It will be to replace a damaged one.

Hi

Welcome to the club.

I am a little confused. When I forgot my tail gate and pulled out from under the trailer all I damage was a $1,000.00 tail gate.

I can only guess that you mean you left the tail gate down and tried to move the trailer.

I got the large door on the generator compartment with my forklift.

I removed the door. There are a couple of rivet in the very bottom of the frame around the door. Drill them out and you can with care remove the frame from the door.

My inner panel and the center insulation were not damage severely. The frame was bent and the outer panel pierced.

The frame is fairly malleable and I was able to straighten it. Then the local cabinet shop cut a piece of white material that was the same thickness as the outer panel but much more flexible than the stuff they used on counter tops many years ago.

I just don’t remember how I fasten the frame back together I do know I didn’t use rivets I may have used counter sunk sheet metal screws.

The second time I damage the same door I didn’t bend anything so I just use some white “quad” to patch the cracks. LOL

Mike, if I recall, the size of the door is determined by the "rough" cut in the wall. Since the frame and door are attached with the hinge, it is all one piece. It is length X height. In some cases, it might also include the thickness of the wall. So, you may want to know that, also.

Before installing the new door, make sure there is putty tape all around the inside of the frame for obvious reasons.

Unless my experience is unique, you'll not get just the door, but frame and all. I had one of my storage compartment doors turn brown at the bottom and Keystone's supplier wouldn't just ship the door itself. The service writer just sat inside the compartment and measured the frame dimensions as it sat in the rough cutout hole in the side of the fiver. The door came about 3/16" narrower than my original door, just enough that I couldn't just swap out the door itself by removing one screw on the hinge and sliding it off.

The person who says they have never made a stupid mistake, is a liar. We all do them. However, if you learn from it, then it should be called a 'life teaching moment'. What should really be called a stupid mistake is the one you make a second time!

Appreciate the feedback. I don't feel so bad now! And as indicated by MIMF, and confirmed via phonecon to keystone, "rough cut" is proper measurement process.

If doing something the second time is a stupid mistake what do I say when I make the same mistake the third time?
