Wintering in Texas?

We're thinking of heading to Texas in January for a month or so and than Arizona. We have family and friends in the Dallas area and friends in Apache Junction.
Any recommendations on where to stay and weather conditions to expect?

Dallas in January gets chilly. The hills between Dallas and Apache Junction can get scary that time of year

Are there any campgrounds an hour or so south of Dallas that would be warmer? We may go directly to Az first. It all depends on the weather and roads.

Dick, when we first retired we knew what the winter weather was in Arizona and most of Florida, so we decided to try south Texas. We did a month around South Padre Island, which is about as far south as you can get in Texas. They were having a below average winter but it seemed always windy and in the 50's.

As a life long resident of Texas, I can tell you that there is not much difference between 50 miles north of Dallas and 50-100 miles south of Dallas. January can be sunny and warm (highs of 50's and 60's) or it can be cold and maybe icy (lows in the low 20's to mid teens). And it can be both several times within any two weeks time frame. We don't get a lot of snow/ice, but it is also not uncommon. In January, you can expect one or two winter storms. Unfortunately, it is usually sleet or freezing rain, rather than a nice snow. And that weather can extend much farther south even into San Antonio or more. Last winter it was fairly mild. The winter before, not so much.

Looks like Texas is out. We'll try Az or go back to Fl. We were looking for something different as last year we were home bound

I live in Mesa, AZ. In 30 years here we had temps below 28 twice, I think. One night it was 17 if memory serves. It does rain a fair amount some years during January. We get 7 inches a year and about 40% is in Dec-Jan and again in July-Aug. So we may get 1-2 inches most winters. Oh, it snowed once a mile or two from our house.
It can also be 55-60 degrees for a lot of days too, tho. Warm is more often than cold.
There are like 50 RV parks within 25 miles, so plenty of places to stay. Also there is a nice county park and a state park with elec/water hookups. I think maybe one of them has sewer too.

Thx Tom and Gail. Looking at the routes west from our house, we're thinking of going back to Florida and save the Tx/ Az trip for better weather. That way we may be able to see our son in Ca.

We've spent the last few winters in the Austin area. You get a few frosty mornings but nothing serious. We spent Thanksgiving with my sister and bil near VanAlstyne, north of Dallas and it was jacket weather the whole week we were there. Stayed at the Rocker R RV park. Pretty decent place. Also stayed a few days at Bonham State Park.

Don't let the Texas weather scare you. So far we are having a very mild winter which is certainly not uncommon. I live just north of Houston and the weather today is 70 degrees. The average is about 65 degrees. It does get a little colder as you go north but if you stay along interstate 45 about 75 or 100 miles south of Dallas then you will be alright There are several rv parks along I-45 so you shouldn't have a problem finding a nice park.Check your Good Sam book for locations and inquire and you will be surprised how mild our winters are compared to up north. Good Luck. p.s. I've lived here all my life and seen snow about 5 or 6 times and usually it doesn't stick.

We winter in the RGV (Rio Grande Valley) We are about 7 miles from Mexico by car. This week has been in the 80's, today 70's and Sunday will be in the 50's. But by next Wednesday back to the 70/80's. This is our 5th winter in the RGV, loving it.

We spent several years west of San Antonio, in the Hill Country, about 5 hours north of the RGV. Just too cold there.

Supposed to be about a 50 degree drop from low 70's Saturday afternoon to about 20 by Sunday morning. And even colder Monday morning. Our annual winter roller coaster with temps from 60's/70's to teens/20's and back and forth every few days for the next 2-3 months.
