Towing Big Sky with F-150

First I wish Bingo could have seen this rig while in Charleston SC.

While in Charleston SC last week naturally DW needed to go to Walmart for a few things. Upon entering the parking lot I noticed a fairly new model Big Sky hooked to a Ford F-150 SB 4x4. Please guys I am not trying to open up the Dodge-Ford-Chevy discussion. All these trucks are good TV when properly used. A Toyota towed the space shuttle at 2-3 MPH but not at highway speeds. This truck was sitting very low on rear. My concern was overloading GVW. I am no weight police, however, I am concerned when safety comes into play. Maybe the people had just purchased the unit and was on way home. For safety IMO maybe a buddy with a larger TV could have towed the unit home. I would not want this unit too close to me at interstate speeds. Bottom line I do not think a half ton P/u can handle this load. I realize some of you will disagree with this statement just do not flame me. This is only an opinion.

Thanks for allowing me to rant. After too many years with 18 wheelers I do understand stopping heavy weights. We tow with a DW Dodge because we feel safer with dual wheels. Could I tow with a single wheel? Yes, with my weights I could. Everytime I park I wish the duallys were not there, but with my business I can use the truck there. We are part timers since we are too young to retire(haha) so we make do.

Well in Oct we stayed for a few days up in the Pan Handle and parked across from us was a pretty large triple axle Toy Hauler and the TV for it was a 1500 GMC. Don't think I would want a Big Sky behind a 1/2 ton no matter what brand and try going up or down any mountain roads. The one you saw was probably sitting low in the back because it was sitting on the Rubber Snubbers because the springs couldn't hold the weight.

When we see things like this, we should have a phone number to call for the Stupid Police.

Maybe he bought it off a private owner. If he got it from a dealership, you would think they would have said no when he showed up with a F150.

So sad to see or hear about such things.

In our area there always seems to be those that argue many rv'ers don't have the proper license class to be towing a certain weight of rig. Yet, those with the proper license endorsement think it's fine to tow their large rigs with half ton trucks and the original 4 or 5 year old Chinese tires. Yes,sure this happens all too often, were are the Stupid Police!!!

You know the saying: "You can't fix Stupid"
Maybe their Buddy told them that he had been towing that way for years, and no problems, or any number of other stupid comments.

Rant or not, I agree with mach111, so don't fret about those that argue - if you can't fix stupid, then the stupid have no argument when safety is on the line. So there, this is an example of why weight police is not the concern. It's the weight criminal that thinks this is okay and their criminalistic friend's too.

The good news, believe it or not is that I think short beds have more 5er tow capacity than a long bed cuz the bed weighs less and this can be transferred to the trailer weight since the rest of the truck should be the same, but it won't be enough to cover a Big Sky. I think a reg cab has more capacity, and a little better with a supercrew, but I'll bet it was probably a crew cab that weighs the most meaning less weight left over for the trailer. Wow, I'm now I'm wasting space making a stupid argument.

An F-150 won't cut it any more than any other 1/2 ton. In fact, I wouldn't think a 3/4 ton could handle a Big Sky and a 1 ton would be close. Start with a dually!

I don't think you'll find anyone on this site who thinks it's OK to pull a large 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton truck - at least I hope not!!

Like Bingo, hate to get suckered in to weight discussion ! That said my neighbor been towing a fully loaded multi slide 42 ft toy hauler with his, "lifted" Chevy 4x4 2500 and brags about going 70mph. I have tried talking with him but "no dice"! He is a law enforcement officer, and see's no problem. His justification is the three axles on toy hauler. He claims it balances out the weight. I cringe when I see he, and his family pile in truck for an outing. Three Harley's, couple dirt bikes, and God knows what ever else!

Is this the stupid police people were commenting about earlier?

I got a diesel because I didn't like topping a hill doing 35MPH and turning 4500RPM. I got a dually because I like the stability on the road and the extra pin weight capacity over a 2500. For me, it's the right tool for the job. But trying to tow a Big Sky rig with an F-150 takes a special kind of stupid. Just my 2 cents....

The sad part of this stupidity is that if something were to happen the owner would probably walk away while some poor innocent person would be the one in the ambulance or hearse.

True... even an F-150 towing a Big Sky can take out a Smart Car in the event of a mishap.

Some of these people have the commonsense virus, it removes any rational thinking, it deafens the ears to anyone trying to help them understand their situation with simple logic, and their blinders have grown 2 feet long.

It a shame, because its usually the other person that gets hurt or killed.
