4 WD Tow Vehicle

I found this on another forum. Since I've never owned a 4 WD, I can't vouch for it's accuracy:

I've said for years that 4 WD is unnecessary...here's proof:

That's classic ,My Dad always gave me guff for bothering with 4WD Waste of money one more thing to break Son, he had a 1972 2WD chev pickup with a Camper on the back and when it got real bad mud or snow out Hunting he would just put chains on the back and pass every 4WD and he would Laugh and Laugh

I only needed all 6 wheels pulling a couple times, but I was sure happy I could. Them big tow trucks are expensive

Had ford pickups in the 70's that would do that. Since we take our TV on jeep trails (see scratches down both sides). I'll stick with my 4WD for the heavy weight moose we have now.

There is a particular campsite I go to that they water the grass very heavy and I need 4 wheel drive to back into my space. Thats about the only time I use it. Its up hill a little bit and my tires spin on the wet grass. (real rough!)

Only one of the trucks I have owned has not been a 4 x 4, the difference in a 2 wheel drive and a 4 wheel drive is the distance you will be back in the toolies when you either get stuck or the thing breaks down.

Have been in places with all 4 wheels chained up and still could not get through the snow drifts.

Never used the 4 wheel drive with the Montana and hope not to have to, but I do use it in the winter and would not be without it. I just don't go in places I used to go when I was young and foolish.

Love the U tube link.

This is likely the last truck i will own and it's a 4x4. I have used 4WD when backing the Monty into a spot several times. 4x4 comes in very handy in snow country as well. I'm not particularly fond of wrestling with tire chains ( although they certainly have their place).

I would not be without 4x4. It has saved me several time while towing the Monty. I also drive the tow vehicle all through the winter here in western PA. We don't get all that much snow but then again, when it hits.....IT HITS!

I have also used the low range in the 4x4 transfer case to assist maneuvering the trailer in tight or hilly areas. Or when I have to pull the trailer up a steep hill very slowly. The low range cuts the strain on the transmission by 50%.

When you are on a long steep pull it will also keep your transmission cool. I go to Union Pass in Wyoming. It is 9300 feet high and about half way up my transmission will be 230 degrees so I stop put it low range. By the time I get to the top it will be 190 degrees.

That's one piece of advice I never took from old Dad i never liked putting chains on I did TOOOOO much of that being a truck driver now I just push a button and rock and roll But in the Old days I always seemed to have problems with my 4WD but I think that had to do with all the MUD Bogging and Stump jumping and general THRASHING

I think the skinny tires on the video made the difference. Tall and thin so they could reach through the mud to some sort of solid roadbed. The wider tires of today's vehicles have more contact area that forms a cushion of mud beneath the tires. I have had occasions on mud where the weight of the diesel motor would cause the front end to sink in, and that truck would not move without four wheel drive. Guess it is like an insurance policy, you hope you don't have to use it, but when you need it, it sure is nice to have. Living in snow-prone areas, I have little choice, it is a must, work vehicle (4wd), tow vehicle (4wd), family vehicle (4wd). Hmmm, I am sensing a pattern here! LOL!

One of the few times 4wd has not helped is taking my DUALLY 4WD(yeah the one in the pic) out on the Sand, I have been driving 4WD's and Quads on the beach and Dunes since I was a Kid But Dually's have got to be the worst rigs you can take out there ,it is pretty embarrassing to be stuck up to your transfer case and to have a Lexus pass you up on the Beach and wave at the Big Bad Dually From now on I'll stick to joy riding on the beach with our Scooters

I think that video is like comparing apples to oranges with today's cars. Most of the vehicles are made totally different today with the tires as Bingo mentioned. I also noticed how you don’t have the clearance on a lot of models today that they had then. I wouldn't own a dually without it being a 4$X4$ they can get stuck much faster due to the surface area and the weight distribution. I’ve also had the 4$X4$ get me out of a mess more than one once. I'm sold on them!

We have always had 4WD tow vehicles and that has gotten us out of potential problems many times.

It's not always mud that gets you in 4x4 trouble. I've only used my 4x4 three times and that saved me from having to call for help or stay stuck and none of them involved mud. Like someone else said. Just push a button and voila, problem solved. I am very happy with my overpriced, higher maintenance, heavier solution. And just for good measure, my next truck will have it too.

I was always intrigued by videos of those old spindly trucks and cars trouncing through junk like that, but only imagine driving those things across country today. We are more tuned to comfort, convenience and this is why we pay more for less than what it looks like they provided. But don't put me back in yesteryear. I do not mind what I have available to me today. I guess I agree with Bill n Donna, 1retired06 and others. Thanks for the video post Hooker but I think that's very weak proof against 4x4 .

I like the Viagra commercial where the guy takes horses out of the horse van to pull the truck out of a mud hole. What has that got to do with Viagra?

My first Dually was not a 4X4.This one is....that's it.

Well nothing Rich but you can't discuss what Vigra is really for on TV so they haft to work around that a little bit and still give you something you will watch.

True the difference is the skinny tires. New trucks with their fat tires need 4wd. The skinnyer the tire the better in getting thru muck and snow....

If the mud is up to your door post, you are stuck, no matter 4X4 or not

2012 F250 4X4 - First campground with Monty arrived at dusk and night dew/moisture fell on the rocky/grassy roads. 4X4 kept us from throwing the gravel while backing in. Just when you least expect it.(slipping) An insurance policy I was willing to pay for and have used since then. Always trying to reduce our risk when we can afford it. :-)
