Has this ever happened to you?

Our refrigerator has stopped working on electric. When we change over to propane it works fine. We have checked the circuit breakers and they seem to be fine and have written to Dometic but have not received a response.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Open the bottom outside cover/door for your frige. You should find a single plug outlet. Test it to make sure you have 110VAC at that outlet. If not look for a popped GFI outlet.
Let us know what you find.
Cheers,

Probably goes without saying but also make sure that the refer is fully plugged into that outlet -- on mine the refer cabinet pushed the plug over 90 degrees when they slid the unit into the space -- the plug looked like it was in but wasn't; dealer actually had to remove the refer and rewire the recepticle to the other side of the space so that the refer could fit in properly!!.. Didn't think of it at the time but in retrospect, it could have easily arced....

Our 3500RL stopped working on electric when it was only a few months old. Stopped by the dealer on the way to the lake and 45 minutes later we were on our way with a new electric heating element. If I remember correctly, it's in the stack above the propane burner. To check the old one, the tech disconnected it and checked the resistance and found it out of limits. The testing only took about 5 or 10 minutes. Most of the time was waiting for them to find the correct element in their parts room. Been working good for over 3 years since replacement.

happened to us last summer, it was the heating element, on propane it uses the flame and on electric it needs the element. Stacy

Thanks so much. We're sure that is our problem and will get a new one as soon as we get near a RV place that has the part. Thankfully everything works on propane but we did lose most of what we had before we realized it was not working. (:

Bill and Helen,

Sorry to hear your fridge has acted up on you. Last year we had the coolant leak out of the fridge. Sort of a gooey yellow substance. The fridge would not work on gas or electric. It took us a couple of days to realize it was not working and by then we'd lost just about everything.

Fortunately it was under a recall so was fixed at Dometic's expense. When we need another fridge I think we'll go with a regular household type. They make them that will fit almost perfectly into the fridge slot. And they are much cheaper. Of course they only work on electric. But we'll either be hooked up or running the generator.

Watch for the leaking yellow stuff.

See you on down the road.

Yes,
I replaced my only 3 year old Dometic with a 24" Wide Whirlpool Apt Size Fridge at Lowes. Besides having much more interior space and cooling much faster and better, it defrosts itself too.
Installation issues were that 24" is "nominal" and several "high" spots along the sides of the cabinetry took some or a LOT of sanding to get the Whirlpool to slide in. Then needed to insulate on top and bottom of unit to keep outside air out (The Whirlpool is a little shorter too).
Saves some weight too.
As I'm plugged in long term on a building site, its the envy of the other campers.

RRman,

Thanks for sharing. It's good to know that someone has actually done such a thing.

Dennis,

We did same on the prior TT. For about $250.00 (this was like 8 years ago, adjust for inflation), we purchased an apartment sized regular ole house frig.

Now, we don't make it a habit of driving for 12 hours in 90 plus degree heat, SOOOO, we had no trouble with stuff spoiling. Then, factor in that we stuffed that frig, so, the goods kept each other cold??

I loved that frig, wanted to take it out and put it in Tana, Al would not hear of it, but, I wanted that frig!!

I would go there again, but we don't boondock, and do other types of travel that would deem the propane to be a good thing. Don't need it, for our kind of traveling/camping/rving.

I loved that I could get 2 weeks of groceries and frozen foods in there, and ya all remember, my DH LOVES to eat! so that was a lot of groceries!
