Direct TV ties you to a large fixed or the expensive winegard traveler antenna for hd.

That's one of the reasons we left Direct TV after being a customer for many years. I wanted a portable automatic sat dish that picks up HD and has a good price.

Several neighbors in our snowbird park here in Florida have HD Direct TV, and use a portable tripod dish not much bigger than the round one I use with our Non HD direct TV. It has a different larger LBE and is elliptical rather than round, and a bit bigger, but not by much. Still manageable to carry in the fiver. Not sure if HD is more difficult to connect, takes me just a few minutes to set up with the Non HD.

I went to DTV HD at the same time I picked up my RV in 2011. I have used the SL3 (oval dish) on a tripod since then. I can get it setup and dialed into the satellites usually under 10 minutes. That is faster then some of the automatic dishes including my recently installed roof top one (I got lazy and wanted a single button to push).

It is relatively easy to have HD with DTV using a portable mount antenna.

I use the following setup with Direct TV. I bring a home receiver with me and get HD and all my home channels. You can probably find the Slim Line Dish free on Craigslist. That’s where I found my extra one. Usually takes me 5-10 minutes to set up.

An additional benefit of the SL3 antenna and the DTV SWM system is that every TV in the RV can access any channel on any satellite regardless of what the others are watching.

Diplexer beware!

If I set my post bubble-center, it takes me only a few minutes to set up my DirecTV HD dish. I had been using DirecTV SD, but knew they were discontinuing it so went to HD. The SD worked fine in my 2018 3121RL, but the HD did not. I discovered that the rig was wired using diplexers to get by with one coax lead to the TV's for both Antenna/Cable and satellite. The diplexers work great with DISH, but NOT with DirecTV HD. I had to remove the diplexers to run the latter through the coach wiring. Now I have to manually reconnect if I switch from satellite to antenna/cable. Not a big deal, but I wish Montana had provided appropriate labeling OR used two leads.

I put my $2000.00 SWM3 Slime line Travelers Dish on a Two wheel dolly with the mount plate an self tapping screws. If someone steals it, they're on cam an I got insurance. Just need police report and I got New one. I use 100ft of coax, can put it any where. Would put on top but a lot of times trees are in way, this makes life some easy.

I'd like the Winegard Traveler installed on my roof but I'm not paying the >$2000 to make that happen. I bought a DTV kit off of Amazon. Included dish, tripod, power inserter, and a cheap Cracker Jack compass. As others have noted, it takes about 10 minutes to get it dialed in, sometimes less. I hook it up to my HR54 I bring from home and the wireless bridge so I can watch TV in the bedroom using a DTV wireless client. This bypasses all of the crummy Keystone wiring that won't carry a DTV signal. Pic is from a few weeks ago on our spring break trip to Grand Canyon. Snow+Slides=sucks. However, I was surprised that we didn't lose satellite signal even with the dish covered in snow.

Sorry, there will be no pictures because this is how I roll., but free your mind by laying the two dolly on the ground, just as you would mounting it on the roof of your RV, center the mount plate and use self tapping screws to mount this plate.(This is the plate the dish collapses down on so the mechanism does not dig up your rubber roof) After you mount the plate, center the Travelers Dish and mount it to the plate with self tapping screws.

Which of the systems, DirecTV or DISH give the best for local channels when traveling for the least cost? DW and I like to know the local weather in the area we are staying, do both provide this at the same cost? We don't really want to add anything else to the roof and the idea of just setting it up on the ground reminds me of my military days setting up a field antenna. For us it's all about cost of equipment and monthly operations cost, we currently just use the over the air which is very limited.

AT&T DirecTV cost us $180 a month but that's for house and RV. you can have local channels but to do that is when you are out of the 250 mile radius of your permanent address you call AT&T DirecTV and tell them your new location. NOTE: The more you talk to AT&T DirecTV the more they will screw up your programing and your bill. So once you set it up just don't talk to them. you can use King Dom but you will get down graded signal. HD ONLY, ONLY comes in on SWM3 LMB dish setup with AT&T DirecTV. The Lower the package the less you pay. We also use ROKU on phone HOTSPOT, one move will eat up 2 Gig. with smart TV. Don't get HOTSPOT and unlimited data confused. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME like some people think. Here is our set up, the TRAVELERS Dish is around 2K, cheapest to get it at is SOLID SIGNAL.COM, be safe and see God's beautiful USA.
