Badlands, SD. Where best to stay...

We are planning on going to the Badlands and are looking for suggestions on RV parks. May stay for a week and so we would want full hookup. Cable TV and if no cell signal WIFI is a must. Would like to be camped within a 30 minute drive but not in the Badlands Park itself.

What say you??????????????????

Check this one out http://www.beaverlakecampground.net/ it is in Custer, SD a good jump off point for the badlands. There were several MOC'ers there when we were there....there is a KOA Custer, right next door. DRIVE RIGHT BY IT...DO NOT STAY THERE..It was the worst C.G we have ever been in...

I agree with the Beaver Lake Campground but it is a ways away from the Badlands. The best ones closest to the Badlands are the KOA inside Interior. The only other near by is in the town of Wall where the famous Wall Drug is located. I will warn you though that a whole week in the Badlands is a long time. I would rather spend the week in the Black Hills like Rich mentioned at the Beaver Lake and drive to the Badlands and Wall Drug for the day only. There is way more to see in the Black Hills.

Glenn, I made reservations at the Badlands Ranch and RV Resort. They are a PA park - 1st night 1/2 off, the reg price after that, but FHU were only $22/night. They offer a tour into the Badlands on horseback ($40/ea). We had to cancel our reseravtion, though and put everything on hold. We were going to leave this coming Thu for Saskatchewan (son and his wife) and then go down to the Black Hills and the Badlands before swinging back to the Rally, but my mother is in the last stages of dementia. We now have Hospice coming to the house daily and she has stopped taking food and water.

We got slightly side tracked. Nothing new for these full timers. Instead of the Badlands we ended up in Buffalo, WY at the Indian Campground. Got here early so we did take a short drive into the Big Horn National Forest. Will do a full trip tomorrow and in all likelihood we will be here 3 or 4 more days.
The Black Hills and Badlands will probably be our next 2 stops. That is if there ain't nothing around Sundance, WY. But than again the Devil's Tower is near Sundance. Whatever, sooner or later we will get to South Dakota.

As I said...
On the road again.
I just can't wait to be confused again.
The life I love is not knowing where I'm going.
I just can't wait to get on the road again.

BTW-Thanks to all that replied to the post. I was all set for a week in the Badlands and now you all got me confused again AND WE LOVE IT!!!

Glenn -

The Belvidere East KOA was a nice place to stay and the owners also own a Montana. I told them about the MOC and got them information on the web site. Nice folks, and it was well kept.

If you don't need hookups, there is a NP campground next to the south visitor center. A little further south (in Interior) is a highly rated KOA. We stayed at the Ranch, but no wi-fi or cell signal and some of the sites were tough to get in or out if the park is anywhere near full.

We stayed at Deer Park RV Park in Buffalo - it was a great place to stay. We had a truck issue and they made sure we had room to stay until we could get the problem fixed. We stayed at Kemp's Kamp in Keystone, SD. DO NOT STAY THERE! The water was terrible - turned our filters dark brown within a week. Black tank overflowed while dumping because someone had their sewer hose stuffed down the dump hole. CG owner was very blase about the whole thing. Do agree with others that staying in the Black Hills would be good idea. We drove to Wall from there and had a great day trip. Besides, you need to be close enough to Custer to go to the Purple Pie Place for some wonderful, homemade pie!

Oh boy...... You hit the nail on the head..... The Purple Pie Palace in downtown Custer. You can't miss it. Check my blog for pictures sometime in June of this year. I suppose they are all out of rhubarb pie but they all are good, as is the ice cream. If you are hungry be sure to try their Bison Goulash. They usally have it on Monday's.

Be sure to say hi to the cook from Benson. MN. That is where Bill is from also.

dsprik, yes, the KOA/White River in Interior has wi-fi. It's just a couple of miles outside the park boundary.

I should mention that we are NOT at all fans of any KOA. 90% of them are way overpriced for what you get.

BUT, IF push comes to shove I just may have to check into those mentioned above.

Glenn -

The one in Belvidere also had wifi for free. There is a really nice campground near Hill City called Rafter Bar J. It is right off of the Michelsen bike trail. It was really different in that the campsites were set up in pockets so there was lots of green space open. Each "pod" of campsites had anywhere from 8 - 20 sites as I recall. Well kept. A little expensive as I recall but one of the nicer C.G.'s we've ever stayed at out west. Have a great trip.

Glenn,
We were just out in Custer and the Badlands in July. Did quite a bit of riding and hiking in both Custer SP and Badlands NP. If you have the time, drive to Sheep Table Mountain in the Badlands. You have to drive on about 4 miles of gravel road, but really not bad, and you end up on the top. It is actually a large plateau with wonderful views.

Have fun and be safe. Dee

We stayed at the KOA in Interior Tuesday night - it was very nice. Today we arrived at Bear Lake Campground in Custer and it is also very nice. We'll be here until September 5.

What a beautiful country this is!!!!!
