death of Appollo

Ok after 6 years our microwave finally died. I know so many of you have already been down this road. Off to Best Buy I go and buy an elcheapo but my question is Do you change out the strange electrical plug for a standard 3 way plug or do I have to change the plug on the microwave wire?
If I change it out anything I need to know other than turning off the circuit breaker?

That does not make sense. I suggest you contact someone like NCFISCHERS who is a certified electrician and get accurate input.

Our Mirco/Convection uses a standard three wire cord plugged into a single outlet in the cupboard right above. Nothing special about it.

Well mine has a round ground hole one vertical blade and one horizonal blade. Most standard plugs has the round ground hole and both blades in the same direction.

This is a 20 amp plug and the recep it plugs into should have one slot shaped like -l so a 15 will plug in as well as a 20 amp. The standard plug is 15 amps or less.
Your oven probably draws more than 15 amps so they use this plug.
Hope this helps. http://www.creativehomeowner.com/ind...ectid=chele018

The 20 amp outlets I see at HD or similar have one slot that is T shaped so it will accept either type plug.

Phil,

are you getting another convection/micro or just a micro? Let us know what you replace it with, figure mine may go sometime in the future as well and would like to know what fits when my time comes.

If the plug for the Apollo has the horizontal & vertical blade styles that means the microwave REQUIRES a 20 amp plug and should not be plugged into a 15 amp plug (the reason for the different plug). The wall outlet that is wired to a 20 amp source could also have the matching female plug. However, oftentimes the wall outlet will also have the dual vertical slots too, so that a 15 amp device can be used in that outlet, it's just that the outlet will never have to draw 20 amps since the device plugged into the outlet is only 15 amps. You can use a 15 or 20 amp plug in a 20 amp outlet, but you MUST not go the other way around, which is why the 20 amp device cannot be plugged into a 15 amp outlet.

If the 20 amp outlet only accomocates a 20 amp plug, you can probably buy a 15amp to 20 amp adapter to accomodate the plug, but again you won't be able to find a 20amp to 15 amp adapter because this should be dangerous.

There is nothing wrong with using a 15 amp MW in that cubby hole where the 20 amp MW/convection oven was located. Chances are the 20 amps was needed for supporting the convection part of the oven which can require quite a bit of power and a 15 amp plug wouldn't cut it.

There are 20 amp or 15 amp MW/Convection ovens. If you find a 20 amp MW/Conv oven, then the cubby hole will support it. If you find a 15 amp MW/convection oven, then you'll be using less power and can only support lower power settings but it will work fine. Do not try to use a 20 amp mw/conv unit in a 15 amp outlet.

Thanks for the education guys. Seems I was just not pushing my 15 amp plug in hard enough to engage the 20 amp receptable. Pushed real hard and it went in and works like a charm. Now all I have to do is figure out some way of securing MW in cubby hole. Going to have to wait till I get back to sticks and bricks where I have some wood working tools.
Wingerphil, I am not replacing with convection - we never used it anyway. I went over to Best Buy in Pensacola and bought the cheapest unit I could find that would fit in the cubby hole. We were in a hurry so I am sure someone else can offer better advise on what is the best model. By the way the failure on mine was the door latch broke and since we didn't like it anyway didn't want to invest in repair.

We also replaced, again because of broken door latch on previous fifthwheel. Used two 90 degree braces from Home Depot, with a 2by4 frame around the base of the M/W. Had to build a base to raise the oven up 3 inches, and then added trim to clean up the cabinent appearance. I also simply plugged in the new unit, but went from a convection to just a MW.

We had a $1.49 door latch break. They would not sell just the door latch, you had to buy the whole door for $80.00. A new Microwave was $129.00.We got a new microwave. We are a disposable society.

The new Apollo 1/2 Time micro/convection no longer uses the push button type door latch. I replaced ours last year with another Apollo. The new model door is just a push to close/pull to open type. Looks identical to the old one except for the minor difference in the door.

Phil,

sounds like you got it handled well. DW loves the convection oven, never even uses the gas oven anymore, so I would have to get the combo unit it if ours goes South. The new Apollo sounds like the easiest since it should just be a "plug and play" replace with out any cabinet mods.
Hopefully I have not jinxed myself since ours is still working fine.
