Need Road Info

Has anyone ever been across Old Highway 90 (FR540) in Colorado? It runs from Montrose, Colorado to Utah Route 46. We are heading from Pueblo, Co. to Moab, Utah. It's a lot less distance going straight. The GPS wants us to go up through Grand Junction. Thanks in advance.

Ron, if no help here, you might try contacting the chamber of commerce or some city office in Montrose and get their opinion. If it's a no-go I'd bet they'd know. Just a thought. We've not been on that particular road, not even solo.

I was hoping someone would have been through there, but that's a good idea. I'll look up the Montrose Chamber and give them a try. Thanks.

Ron,

I think I would leave that road alone. Not sure how much Montrose Cty works on those types of roads in the winter. I know in Mesa Cty (Grand Junction's Cty) totally ignores those roads much of the year.

Why not take 550 south out of Montrose to Ridgway and pick up 82, take that to 140 which meets up with 90 ?

Dean -
We are going at Memorial Day, so the roads should be open then. I am curious if it is passable by fifth wheel without doing damage. It would save quite a bit of distance. I will look at the route you suggested. Thanks.

You are a glutton for punishment (or is that adventure?). Hwy 90 is not a bad road however it does get as crooked as a sidewinder over close to the Utah border about 23 miles west of Vancorum. When you cross the stateline, it becomes UT 46. This segment also has some horseshoe turns but if you don't get in too big a hurry, you will do just fine.

Even after Memorial Day, check with the various DOTs to make sure you don't run into late snow or early slides.

Have a good trip.

I kinda agree with Dean...altho' I don't recognize those route numbers ? I have elk hunted for 14 years down by Ridgeway, traveled the pueblo-montrose route alot. You're in for a windy, curvy road along the river there. From Montrose, I'd probably go to Ridgeway, then west on 62, then up 145 out of Placerville. Pull up a google map, switch it to "terrain", and you'll see what I mean. I run about 1/2 way out there before turning off...62 is a real nice road to where I turn off. Just some thoughts. If you wanna stop somewhere's and see a 2000' waterfall that takes a helluva hike to get to, lemme know. It is sooooo worth it.

If you just want to get to Moab, I think you would do well to follow your GPS! Actual distance is about 45 mi less but I think driving time would be quite a bit longer.

I wouldn't be surprised if the gps took him on 6, which would take him thru alma, breckenridge, vail, etc. He'd be in great shape from pueblo to alma, but it might get adventurous after that. I'd check construction...last I heard, vail to glenwood springs was an orange cone forest.

No matter what, ya gotta git over dem mountains !

Sounds like he will take US50 from Pueblo all the way to Montrose. His GPS would probably take him N on 50 and he could take 141 over to I 70.

Taking the "shortcut" through Naturita and Paradox involves a lot of switchbacks and it is a tiring drive.

That could be...I'd be interested which way his gps tells him to go...That Arkansas river drive can be a bit tiring too, and monarch pass ain't no walk in the park. However....if Juan is out there with his tamale cooker along the Arkansas I'll take six !!
