If you are heading up from the south you can turn off I5 at Olympia and head up Hwy 101 all the way to Port Angeles bypassing Seattle. I have taken the ferry from Whidby Island (About 35 miles SW of Bellingham) to Port Townsend. It is not a large ferry but does take RV's. Not very big and no reservations. However it is a nice ride and Port Townsend is a really neat place to visit.
