New Mexico Advice

Thinking about leaving San Antonio in a week or so and heading north to get out of the heat. We have to be back by the third week of October to get ready for a South America trip. Considering going to Carlsbad or Roswell on Day One (already been to the Caverns-no desire to repeat) and then head to Chama on Day Three and stay for at least a week, then work our way back home. Any advice on Campgrounds, things to do, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Any time anyone inquires about Carlsbad, there are always comments recommending avoiding US 285 between Carlsbad and I-20, maybe even I-10. Apparently a very rough highway due to heavy oil field traffic.

If you plan to ride the Cumbres & Toltec steam train (and I recommend it), take the bus from Chama to Antonito and ride the train back. Antonito is in the flat dry San Luis valley. The train starts there and begins its climb into mountains and over the high passes. Would be somewhat anticlimactic the other direction.

Just north of Carlsbad is The Ranch, an Escapee park in Lakewood, NM. Several of us own lots there. Sitting Bull falls, Cloud Croft, White Sands, and Roswell are all day trips from there. They have reverse osmosis water, good Wifi and reasonable rates.

If you are a science type of person, the very large array, radio telescope system of multiple large dishes is very cool. Was used in the movie Contact. It is about an hour drive west of score on us 60. American rv park in abq, santa fe skys on outskirts of Santa fe are best parks to stay at on way north. Banderler cliff ruins near Los Alamos is a great visit. Second comments on cumbres and Toltec steam train. Have ridden it many times so far and will do more in the future. I prefer to ride it from chama as that way is the best for slow climbing up to the high mountain passes. Lunch at ossier, part of ticket price, is more like a big sit down dinner...meatloaf dinner or turkey dinner complete with dessert, is really great.

If you are a history or art buff you should stop by the real museum in Roswell next to the Chamber of Commerce. One of the best collections of Cowboy and Indian artifacts, a real art museum and Goddards actual lab and home rocket movies. Oil money can buy some cool stuff. And there is also the alien stuff if you're into that.

If you liked Carlsbad, try the Karchner Caverns in Benson, Az after staying in Las Cruces and visiting Messilla.

If you'd like to see something a little different, visit the Smoky the Bear museum.

Learned one thing that may help others considering the Chama area yesterday. Evidently the train has gotten really popular. When I tried to book seats during the week we are going to be there the selection was very limited. My advice: if you intend to ride the train book as far in advance as you can.

It's been about ten years since we rode it. But even then our train was sold out. So yes, plan well in advance.

Chama to Taos on HWY 64 is one of the most scenic drives I've ever been on,especially in mid Sept to early October when aspens are at their peak.
