Got away with one this weekend!
Memorial Day weekend is traditionally our first outing of the year up here in New England. Yesterday we completed packing the Monty, hooked up and started performing the pull test. That went well so we moved on to checking the brake lights etc. and found a ground issue with those which eventually we fixed. However, while checking the brake lights we heard a pop from under the truck and the brake pedal went to the floor. No brakes at this point. It turned out to be a flexible brake line on the drivers side rear wheel that separated at a crimp fitting. We were only minutes from getting on the highway and we are greatful that God was looking out for us before we even left our yard. My mechanic hopes to have it repaired today so perhapsw we can get on the road either this afternoon or early tomorrow morning and salvege something out of the weekend. The issue here is that there is no way to check for this kind of failure before heading out. Sort of frightening.

What kind of truck was this? This is the kinda problem one should never have. I would certainly be concerned about "next time" and if other connectors might do the same thing. I hope they find the "root cause" and not just blindly replace stuff.
Hopefully, this will be behind you and nothing like this happens again.

Art, I have an '04 RAM Heavy Duty, which has really been good to me all these years. The problem up here is always rust mainly due to the chemicals used on the roads during the winter months and the cheap metals used in todays vehicles. My guess is that rust weakened the crimp on one of the flex hoses that runs from the frame to the rear axle. I put a temporary fix on it so I could carefully drive to the shop and where the connection is made there is a lot of corrosion. My mechanic is not only replacing the broken one but he is checking out the other crimped connections while he is under the truck. He tells me that all of the trucks he sees have a great deal of rust under them which is really inexcusable when you think about the money we pay for them.

I always thought if you broke a line to the rear you would still have front brakes and vice versa. Is that not true?????

If you break a line you loose the fluid and the pedal goes to the floor. The rear brakes usually control the amount of pedal there is. Good that it happened where it did for sure. Hvae a great time after it gets fixed and take care.

We just had our 08 F-350 in the Ford garage for a complete brake checkup.It turned 50K miles and we figured it was time. Got a clean bill of health with still nearly 75% of pad and disk left. They were impressed considering they know what we pull.Contribute that to my Dad and his truck driving instructions all these many years ago.

Rich, you should see well into the 100,000 mile range before needing new brakes. I average 140 - 150k on my Silverado's before the dealer said it was time for new brakes. I am at 50k now on my Ram and the shop just did the oil change at 45k - they claimed brakes had about 92% left on them. Not sure how they calculate this, but that's in writing on my 20 point vehicle inspection sheet. I only mention this as you know, I tow heavier loads than you and I also tow at a much faster rate of speed than you. My feeling is you will turn the truck and buy a new one long before you will need brakes on it.

Yes He does watch over us! I've had many breakdowns in the driveway or a parking lot. It's not a pleasant thing when it happens on the highway somewhere. Glad it worked out for you when it did.
