Question About Changing Out Water Pump
Okay, have never done this before, so if this is a silly question, feel free to giggle!
We need to install a new water pump on our Montana.
Do we need to drain the fresh water tank first?
Cheers,
Betty

Betty,
No you won't have to. I just put a mouse pad under mine this weekend to quiet the pump down. I also installed a short braided line in a loop to try to minimize the hammering.
You'll have to remove the screws that hold the pump to the floor, detach the plumbing, in and output lines and remove the 12v electrical wiring. I would suggest that you make sure to have the pump off and relieve the pressure in the lines. You can do that by opening the drain lines in the convenience center. This will minimize the water spill in the basement.

Betty,
Ken gave you great advice. The only thing I would add is to have a helper to hand you tools so you don't have to get in and out of the basement. I changed out my buddy's water pump in his 2007 3400RL and it was sure a tight spot to get in to.

if the pump line comes out of the bottom of the tank you need an empty tank, if your water has to be drawn up to the pump you should't have to.

Betty, great question and the right place to ask it.
1. make sure no water supply (city water) is connected by hose. It pressurizes the same lines.
Then Ken's directions are spot on.
Good luck and let us know how it works out. Pictures if available are always appreciated.

You should find your water pump behind the service center, where you hook up to city water and have the dump handles.

Mr. Bill, behind the compartment where you open your tanks in the basement, there is a "wall" that comes off and the pump is right behind the compartment where the valves are.
We have been so busy, Dave has not had a chance to check out the water lines in this compartment to see if that is where he can turn off the water from the fresh tank. Hope that's where it is, as we sure don't want a flooded basement when he installs the new pump!

One note of caution. If you have the quick disconnect things, make sure they are on correctly before DW or whomever turns the pump on to leak check. You cannot holler "turn it off" loud enough or quick enough to prevent a embarrassing situation.

All good advice. The noise my water pump makes is my#1 annoyance with my 3150RL.

Okay, back to my original question, color me silly but I am still a bit perplexed.
Really perplexed why owner manuals don't contain information you really NEED!
I have not figured out how to insert a photo here, so I'll provide links to the photos in my blog and hopefully that will work.
If you can't get the photos, here's a link to the post containing the photos: http://phoenixonceagain.blogspot.com...ater-pump.html
Photo #1: That's our control compartment. There are two drain lines with shutoff valves. They go out the bottom of the compartment and obviously must be drain valves of some sort, as they are open at the end.
Photo #2: Well, I have not been able to trace back to the fresh water tank from the pump. That's the dead pump still in place. I cannot tell if it is connected at the bottom, the top or the middle of the fresh tank.
Photo #3: This is what I think is the fresh tank low-point drain. Seems like we tried to open this before but it would not budge. We were reluctant to really force it, being afraid it might crack/break. Any suggestions on getting it open if it is really stuck? I know, I know . . . have a REALLY BIG bucket handy! LOL!
The actual installation of the pump seems pretty basic; it's just getting all this figured out and drained.
Again, I'd love to have a manual that actually tells you what stuff is!
Thanks. First person who comes up with a suggestion that actually works can join us for chicken tortilla soup that's simmering in the slow cooker!
Thanks a bunch,
Betty

You are on the right track.
1. Turn off outside water to your unit. Open the two ports in photo 1 to relieve pressure on the system.
2. Photo 3 is your low point drain. Give it a twist with whatever you have on hand (muscle or plier power) and remove the cap. This will drain your fresh water tank and remove all doubt in your mind that water will come gushing out of a line you remove on you old pump.
3. The rest is easy, remove the water QD's, wiring and reinstall the new pump in reverse of your removal process.
Good Luck,
Mike

TxYellowRose,
You are Correct on all three photos.
1. To remove the pressure from the water lines open both the white valves (low point drains). This lets water out and removes pressure. Second open all your water valves (hot and cold) inside so you drain the lines in the trailer. This prevents water from dripping on you as much when you remove the out line of the pump. You can put the out hose in a bucket to collect drips. I believe the out is the one closest to you going up.
2. The white end of the pump in picture two is the water pump area. The two hoses are the in and out. The pump should also have an in and out label so you will know which hose is which. Remove both and do what is needed to pull the pump.
3. Yes the Drain for the fresh water tank is correct. Put pliers on the smaller plastic connection and then another set of pliers on the end cap and unscrew. Note: I see a hose clamp so if you break anything it will be a minor repair by replacing all up to the hose clamp.
Hope this helps and good luck.
