Generators use @ higher altitudes

Hi all,

More generation questions....Most of the generators are jetted for operation @ 5,000' and down.

I am leaning toward either a Honda EU2000i/pair or a Yamaha EF3000ieSB or a Yamaha EF2400iS

How high up can you really use these before you need to re-jet. Honda seems to have a jet for every 2,000' over 5,000 while Yamaha has only one for over 5,000'.

We are planning on the summer in the west and will be @ 3,500' to 8,000'. Doubt it will be used for A/C, only hair dryer and Microwave I really do not want to have to re-jet on a weekly basis.

Pic is from Idaho, June 2008, 6,400', one of our favorite places. We had our pusher then with solar/inverter so altitude was a non issue.

Thanks Jim

According to my owner's manual for the Honda 2000, it says, If you always operate it at over 5,000 feet, have it modified, so I wouldn't think for even a few days use it would do permanent harm. You may want to replace the spark plug after using it at the higher altitude.

Jim, do you have one or two A/Cs? If you have two and plan on both or one and other power using equipment(microwave/ hair dryer / curling iron and similar equipment) I would recommend two Honda 2000i's. One will not work for power to run the A/Cs! If it does, it will really be pushing the single Honda! In reference to changing out the jet, rohrmann's statement would be correct. If you are only going to use it or them above the 5000 ft level, it should not strain it/them.

I used my Honda 3000 IS last year at 9300 feet on Union Pass Wy. I didn't have any trouble with it. I didn't use my AC. When you get up in August and it's 33 degrees you don't need an AC. My tuned truck didn't like the high altitude. It smoked like a steam engine until it got warm.
Union Pass is my favorite place to camp. There is deer, elk, moose, marmots, brown and black bear up there and still snow on the ground at the higher elevations and trout in every stream and lake.

If it is hot enough for needing A/C we will either go to a campground or move. The gensets will be mainly for TV, M/V, hair dryer and such.

We have spent the last 3 summers @ 9,500' in Colorado. We totally understand 40 degree mornings in August.

I live at 6200ft. and camp at even higher altitudes. I have had no problems with my Honda EU2000i and have not rejetted. Maybe I'm lucky? Generator is over 5 years old and well maintained.

mlh - Where did you camp in Union Pass. I drove up about 12 miles past the restaurant from the North side. I didn't see any areas to camp. However it was around mid to late June and there were snow banks covering the road where I stopped.

I have the Honda 2000, and live in Denver at 5200 feet. It doesn't run well here, amd forget it in the mountains. There are three jets available for this generator, and I,plan to,install the high altitude one soon.

Ton you went too early. Late August September is the best time to go. We camp just past the Union Pass sign on the right. It is just pass the second cattle crossing. There are several small roads on the left side where people camp. Just find a spot that looks good and use it.
The Restaurant you passed was the Sawmill. It is now a guest house for some one that is building a house just north of Dubios. My friend who lives in Dubois says the billionaires run all the millionaires out of Jackson over in Dubois.

We have an ei2000 and an ei2000 Companion. One was purchased in Wisconsin when we lived there and the Companion in Colorado. Both have worked fine both at low and high altitude. The only issue is losing power as you gain altitude. But, we only use ours for coffee, TV, lights and charging. When we boondock, we generally don't use A/C or the microwave. We live at 7500 feet and travel between sea level and 10,000 feet.

You loose 3.6% of your power for every 1000 feet of elevation so at 9300 feet my 3000 watt generator just became a 2000 watt generator.

We have 2 Yamaha 2000I, and we're out 3 months staying at national parks in Spring of 2014. (Grand Canyon sout and noth, Zoon, Bryce. Rocky Mtn, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone and Glacier). Didn't rejet, but I found that when at the higher elevatoos, I needed to run both to run small appliances and a battery charger. We didn't run an air conditioner at all. Luv the Yamaha especially when comparing the features.
