WEIGHING IN

I just received my new edition of Highways Magazine and read with interest one member/writers letter to the editor: seems this fellow was concerned that most of us do not weigh our RV wheels separately. Well, I for one have not and probably will not get around to doing so, unless the ability to weigh wheels individually becomes more wide-spread. The writer presented, with what seemed some satisfaction, that he had weighed his wheels separately and had determined that his front, driver's side wheel and rear, passenger side rear wheels were at or over their weight limits. Further, he determined that the slides at both locations were the problem. I was tempted to respond, asking if he had removed his slides to take care of the problem...not nice I guess.

As I recall, Leroy bit off more than he could chew...so, it was good for me that I controlled my impulses. Thanks for the reminder, Phil!

I have weighed each wheel. I was not surprised by the results. The front tires weighed 2780 each. The rear was 2860 lbs on the driver's side and 2460 on the passenger side. The heavy tire has the tube TV (I could save about 150 lbs converting to flat panel) and lots cabinetry and stuff. The passenger side has the sofa bed and that's about it. It is all within specs since the end points of the axles support 3,000 and each tire supports 3,420.

I should probably rotate the RV tires anyway. Does anyone know the pattern? I'd guess an X pattern (front to back and then change sides, too. My TV requires only one of the pair to be crossed over.

Well the poster is correct... If you weigh at one of the rallies by RVSEF or other outfits that weigh at rallies they do a comprehensive weighing including each wheel. We were over the tire rating limits on the heavy side of the 3400 (galley, fridge, etc. (E rated tires)

OK, not totally Montana related, but on another forum I visit someone bought a new 36 Ft TT that grosses out at 11800 and comes with 15 inch D rated Goodyear tires. Think they might have tire a problems?? Another note this person wants to pull that monster with a 1500 Suburban, hope I never see them on the road.

I think those tires have helium in them...that helps deal with the overweight issue...or maybe they will remove the tt slides; that should get them under limits. Then again, maybe just another accident waiting to happen.

I'm not sure how you come up with hellium helping with the overweight issue? In my experience with helium the only thing that helium does is eliminate the tire from inflating from heat. Although I guess overweight would increase heat, but I doubt it would make any significant help with overweight. Could you expain your reasoning on this as I would like to understand.

I do believe that the Helium remark was a bit of tongue and cheek humor..

I agree with the humor, maybe they could fill inside of the TT with Helium Balloons to take some of the weight off the tires.

Yes, it was intended as humor...sorry if it caused anyone any confusion.
