F250 PSD
This is an"FYI" post:
Last week, I customer where I volunteer, pulled up in a brand new 2008 Ford F250, PSD, CC, 4 x 4, Lariat...white exterior, tan leather interior...a fine looking truck. We looked at his numbers from the two stickers...GVWR 10,000, good, a very heavy truck. Cargo capacity 1,861, terrible, very low for a 3/4 ton truck. Then we subtracted 1,861 from 10,000, and determined the empty weight of the truck was 8,139...a very heavy truck!
Anybody looking at new Fords needs to be aware of the very low cargo capacity for these trucks due to their very heavy weight. After you put a hitch on, add a few people and some of the routine things we normally carry...this truck could not carry the empty PW of any Montana and remain within it's factory ratings.
When I looked at these trucks several years ago, a similar truck would have had at least 500# more capacity...maybe the new 6.4L PSD is heavier than the 6.0L PSD.

I think my 3/4 Chev is close to 7200 fuel loaded with hitch which basically leaves me with about 2000 left. Not sure what the 1-ton's offer but ours is 9200 total gvwr.

I hopped on some scales yesterday and my truck, DW and I, full fuel, tool box with tools and Honda 2000, trailersaver hitch=8300lbs, leaving me 3,000 lbs capacity. More than enough for my 3400 hitch pin......

One of the most confusing things about new truck buying is the GVWRs. Most Ford 3/4s have a 10000 rating, where all GMs have a 9200 rating. Therefore, the consensus of uninformed new buyers is that the Ford can haul more...however, the payload capacities for the two vehicles are virtually the same. Ford just makes a heavy truck.

I don't understand what the engineers are doing... If you beef up a truck and make it heavier, it should be given a correspondingly higher GVWR. They apparently are not? Don't these engineers ever pull a fifth wheel themselves?

Ford has increased the GVWR...it's higher by 900# than GMs. But, since the cargo capacity is no greater, just means the truck is 900# heavier.
