Buy a hitch

OK, guys, where do I get a good price on a slider hitch (and rails) - new or used. I'm looking for a good price, as I am leery of my start up expenses (for FTing), and I don't want them to get out of control.

Haven't seen any thing in our local (regional) newpaper ads.

Dave, I don't know where to buy a slider hitch in your area, but I do have an opinion on what you should buy.
Over my 60 some odd years on this good green earth I have found that when you buy used you're buying what used to be called in the sales line "blue skies and sunshine". In other words your buying the sellers word. I, after being stung many times decided a long time ago to buy only new and to make sure I got a warranty on it when I did buy. I don't want someone elses problems. Just my opinion
You're going tpo love full timing!!!!

Dave,
Check your local U-Haul. Our first hitch was bought from the dealer with the montana. They bought from U-Haul. Price was very reasonable. Hitch was made by Valley Industries.

Dave, you didn't scrimp on the rig why would you want to scrimp on the umbilical cord between the Monty and the TV. In my opinion there is only one slider hitch worth owning and you'll find it in my signature. Sure you'll pay more but it is worth it and than some. When you consider the money you spent for the Monty and the TV what's a little bit more for a good quality new hitch????

Glenn took the words right out of my mouth. I cant tell you how many times I have told folks that very thing. I figured the same thing when I bought my coach and truck, especially since I have a shortbed. The Superglide is the way to go, but with the new front ends one might be able to get away with a manual Reese sliding hitch. I am not sure I trust the new cap enough to not be without the Superglide. Just my thoughts....

Don't get me wrong guys, but isn't there more than one price for each brand of hitch? Or does everyone charge the same price? I had a dealer quote some prices for hitches and I know he was very high. I want the BEST price for a high quality hitch. I DON"T want to get taken to the cleaners - can't afford it... I don't want to walk into someplace and just say, "I'll take one of those". That would be foolish. So... I apologize for not being clear enough on my question.

"Where can I get the BEST PRICE for a slider hitch?" Hope this is worded better. No, I'm not trying to buy "used brakes for my expensive car".

Dave,
Call around is about the best advice I can give you. There is no one place that has the best prices that I know of.

Dave, Go to the RV Related Links pages and click on Hitches. Many of the manufacturers have dealer locaters on their web sites. You should be able to get all the hitch info you need from these links.

Aw heck just click here>>> http://www.montanaowners.com/RVRelatedLinks.html#hitch

Glenn's hitch is the cream of the crop. And it is very good. We opted for the new REESE Signature series 18K Hitch with the manual slider. It was a lot cheaper. So far we have not had to use the slider. It has been on the truck over ayear and some 8000 miles on the Montana and truck. I have had the Montana at a 90 degree angle with the truck and its close but did not have to use it. We tow with a 2005 2500HD GMC Crew Cab with the standard short bed. We do have the extended hitch on our Montana.

Thanks, guys! Glenn, I keep forgetting about the great site you put together. I need to spend some time there before asking any more questions.

We have a 16K Reese Kwik Slide. The double pivot head is a must for Me.
I've never had to slide the hitch back yet. My last 2 trucks were Ford short boxes and I never had to
slide the hitch back or rehitch those trucks & trailers either. Just lucky I guess.
Here is the hitch we use now.

Dave,
I know that you want the best price when you get a hitch but you have to remember (and I'm sure you do) that you get what you pay for. As many people have the different hitches, they will all say there's is the best. I have the Trailer Saver which for me was just right. This was after using Draw-Tite and Reese hitches. You have probably looked at this hitch on www.trailersaver.com so you probably know something about it. For us, it has taken out all the pounding you experience from the expansion joints on the highways. It also takes out the "chucking" that a lot of people talk about. I hope this might be helpful for you.

Orv, I really like that hitch. It is over what I can afford right now, though. I wish I had the money to get it. It would be my first choice.

Orv if Dave's lead doen't work out I may have a way for you to go. A co-worker and I have been searching around for a Superglide for him. We have found a way for him to get into a new one for around around $1,500.00. Is that in your price range?

Is that a new one, Dennis? And I assume that would be without the rails/mount?

When I purchased mine it was on sale at $1695. I expect that there will be somebody at the Escapees Escapade in Van Wert, OH in September and it's possible they'll be on sale there. I don't know. I think they sell for right around 2 grand.

I had a phone call from a guy who had contacted Hensley Mfg and somehow they directed them to me. I guess my phone # is in their data base. Anyway, the man wanted to know about the hitch, so I told him and lo and behold he bought the hitch. Then he called me to tell me thanks for letting him know about the hitch.

I'm always willing to oblige.

Orv, Pullrite's website has sug retail @ $1,888. I may entertain a manual slider. I need several other items to go in the new Tana, too. My budget is bursting. I definitely want a good slider, though.
