lug nut covers
I had a hard time getting the lug nut covers off to check tightness of lug nuts, so I took a 1/4" x 5 1/2"shank straight slot screwdriver, heated about 1" of the end and bent it about 45 degrees and it works great ( I also retempered it with cutting solution)(water will also work)

Ours are fairly tight but they come off easily with channel lock pliers. Maybe yours are too tight for that. When I need to check torque a few times after a wheel has been removed I usually leave those covers off until the lugs no longer tighten. If anyone is missing any of these lug covers, catch me at the rally. I somehow acquired a number of extras.

I got a bag with 6 or so extras with my trailer. By the time I need them, I won't be able to find them. I guess I'll have to buy aluminium wheels and new lugs.

You too huh? Ill probably toss those little black covers over my shoulder next time and that gives me an excuse to get some of those fancy aluminium wheels to sport also.

John and Kenny, if that works for you, let me know and I just might try it on Vicki. Somehow I can't see her buying into that, though.

I think I remember seeing those little black covers in one of our drawers, but don't think we have ever put them on. Is there an advantage or disadvantage to using the lug nut covers??

The only disadvantage that I have found I took ours off after about 3 Mos of being Faye ask me why the lug nuts looks so bad & I told her I took off the covers & put them in the garage at home she give me that look but they are still in the garage.

I keep them on since I think they look nicer with them on. But I'd give them up if I could get the aluminum wheels. Sigh.

The covers do serve a purpose, they prevent the nuts from rusting tight on the studs. They do keep most of the water out. Could be a serious problen on the road without an air wrench if you have to change a tire.

Carol, whenever a wheel has been dismounted/mounted the lug nuts will work loose a bit for awhile. You are supposed to stop every 50 to 100 miles or so and retorque the lugnuts. It usually takes two or three retorquings before ours don't move anymore and I can put the lugnut covers back on. This is true for the standard painted rims but I'm not sure if the aluminum rims require the same retorquing process or not.

oh, yea, they require the retorquing, Al has a torque wrench thingy in the truck all the time now, since we have had the tires off a few times in the last couple of months. I was just joking again, about Good Sam, they do change our tires, but Al stands watch over them, and good thing too. One time they sent out a nice big tow truck, but the guy had next to NO tools, and had to use half of ours, and that was just the beginning. SIGH. Next time, was not much better, but Al still had to let them use some of his tools, and I am not sure I remember this right, but I think he put too much torque to the lug nuts when he put it back on, or too much air in the tire, or some such silly stuff. These are supposed to be professionals, man, it has been sad. Oh, and they had all 4 tires off when we were in Goshen. So, we are checking those lug nuts a LOT lately. Like every time we stop to go potty or walk the dogs.
Carol
