Full Synthetic Oil

Curious as to how many of you are running full synthetic oil in your tow vehicle and what your approximately mileage change interval is? Based on Ford's recommendation I think that we all (Ford owners) should be...

I use the Rotella T6 synthetic and change every 7,500 give or take a couple of hundred and change the fuel filters every third oil change.

I have never used synthetic oil. Oil changed at 5,000 miles. And between DW and myself well over a million miles driven and never an engine failure on any vehicle except a seized bearing on a 1978 Chevy LUV 4 banger pickup at 150,000 miles. And I drove that one hard. See no need for synthetic.

I use Ford oil and have it changed at a Ford dealer. It I am doing a lot of towing at about 5000 or so miles. If not towing at about 7500 miles and change filter every time.

Is’s Got 52000 miles on it and time for the trans oil to be changed sand the trans to be serviced. Fuel filters every 20000 miles or a bit less.

It's my understanding that it's the fuel injectors which are operated under very high pressure from the engine oil and are very sensitive to clean oil with excellent lubriciticy that benefit from the use of synthetic oils. Because of the extremely high cost of repairing the fuel injection components vs. the small cost increase of using synthetic oils, I feel it's money well spent.

I run Mobile 1 and change when Ford says I should. They built the truck and knows better than I do.
Synthetic is better oil no question. Is it really necessary, that is debatable. It is better for your turbo and your engine is better protected but the engine will outlast the rest of the truck anyway so why bother.
Just be sure you get what is recommended for your truck. Read the owners manual and the label on the oil and be sure it’s recommended. If not the warranty may not cover the engine.

We change the oil every 5,000 miles with good quality regular oil and change the filters every other time. The truck is pretty much only for pulling however so I don't stretch the miles because that works out to about every six months.

We have 2005 F250 6.0 diesel. Purchased it from original owner when we got Montana from him, truck had 110,000 miles on it at that time. He kept a log of all work done on truck since new. He changed dino oil and filter every 3,000 miles. He changed to Rotella T6 full synthetic at around 90,000 miles and extended oil change interval to 5,000 miles.

Truck now has 145,000 miles on it. About 15,000 miles ago, I sent oil to Blackstone for analysis. They said engine is in great shape, and I could extend change interval to 6,000 miles.

Uh-oh, another oil thread...

I run full synthetic... Not sure about intervals since I haven't had the truck that long yet. From what I've read on the Cummins forum, the interval on the 6.7 with synthetic seems to run between 7500-10000.

And then there the whole other debate about miles vs. months..

This is my first diesel, and I just know that I was very surprised at how quickly the oil gets black again after an oil change.

The oil in a diesel gets dirty as soon as you start it lol.

Apparently I am in the tiny minority. I use what ever the Chevy dealer installs (forget the brand) and run 10,000 miles between changes. I think Diesel place forum had people say just use what the console says, and I have. Old truck had 130,000 when I traded and this one has 90,000 so far.

The previous owner went 10K between changes or once a year, whichever came first. I may do the same. Unless the console says to do it sooner...

I have a 2016 F350 with the diesel. Bought it new in 2015. The dealership I purchased from gives 10 years free oil changes. Ford uses a synthetic blend and I get the oil changed 3 times a year regardless of mileage. At their rate of $92.00 for an oil change, I am saving $2760.00.

I have a 2013 F250 6.7l diesel and have used synthetic since the first oil change. T6 Shell Rotella and the oil change reminder comes up every 7200 to 7500 miles. I did use Amsoil once, but the directive was to change the oil when the reminder came up. I found that I only got 7500 miles on an oil that was supposed to last 25k. So, for reasons of price, I started using T6 with no regrets and have been satisfied ever since.

A newer Ram will go 14k on an oil change with factory recommended oil. A bit less if towing. I'm just not mentally able to let it go that for so I change it at about 75%. What is the point of synthetic (many aren't rated for diesel use) when you get this kind of longevity for a motor that will go 300k+ miles?

Ram recommends 15,000 mile oil change for 2013 and later Cummins engines. I use Shell T-6 synthetic and change oil every 10,000 to 12,000 miles, depending on how much I tow. When I was a kid many many years ago oil changes were every 3,000 miles. The engines and oil have come a long way so there is no reason to change as frequently as use to. Old school habits are hard to break.

2016 GMC 2500 HD Denali Duramax. Oil (Rotella 15-40) and filter every 3-4000 miles. Cheap insurance. Same with previous 2006 Duramax.

2011 Ford, 118,000 miles with Ford's semi syn diesel oil every 5-6000 miles. It's changed at a Ford dealership as I still have kept an extended warranty on this very early build 6.7 JOB 1 truck. Oil filter changed every change along with tire rotation. Fuel filters changed at 15-20,000 or after a 6-8000 mile trip. The waste oil is not very diert when it's compared to my diesel tractor Rotella oil that comes out about the color of road tar after 50 hours. I have used full synthetic oil on earlier cars and trucks and have seen zero difference in fuel mileage to cost of driving.

The only oil I have ever used with poor results is Castrol which seemed to run straight through the filler to the tail pipe, having to add 2-3 quarts in 5K miles between changes vs none for Mobil 1 or Ford semi syn
