We just made that trip a couple of weeks ago. We went North on 191 to 26 and then East to Douglas Wyoming. (Very nice KOA there, cheap and open year round) north on 59 and then East through Newcastle to Custer. This time of year is touch and go because of two passes that can get a lot of snow.

Funny story I have about snow. We did a National Parks tour starting mid September to mid October (about 3 weeks). Since we live in Southern California and I didn't know what to expect, I packed everything I could think of. Winter coats, gloves, etc. along with T-shirts and shorts. My wife thought I was crazy but she packed the same (but not quite enough). About 6 days into our trip being at Teton National Park, there was a freak winter storm following an 80 degree day (It was between 80 and 90 up to this point). The temps plummeted averaging 39 degrees during the day for the next 10 days. We were prepared so as we proceeded to Yellowstone, then Custer National Monument, Devil's Tower and Glacier National Park and met locals who were completely caught off guard, they were amazed we were so prepared. I had to explain we were only prepared because I was ignorant what to expect. We were pretty lucky that trip and was able to enjoy every place we went because of the warm clothing we had. The next day after arriving at Glacier National Park the temps rose again to the 80s. It stayed that way on toward Lavalands, Zion, and Bryce and we stayed in light clothing.

Don't assume snow is not a problem in September in that area. Stay prepared.

Cumminalong, is this trip next year? I would also add going up through Yellowstone to Gardner, Mt. head straight up to 90 and across. You can also visit Little Bighorn along the way.
