Travel trivia, Utah and Northern Arizona UPDATED!!

Two things we have learned this last week here in Utah and Northern Arizona..

1.) The tunnel through Zion National park. The $15.00 surcharge still applies to those of us that drive monster trucks. Here is the web site. The web site used to have some language about "escorting" us through. We did not find that to be true 4 years ago, and it is not true now either.

The language now reads: "Rangers posted at both ends of the tunnel convert two-way tunnel traffic to one-way for larger vehicles, ensuring safe passage."

When you pay your $15.00 fee at the entrance gates they will give you a pass and directions. They gave us very good directions (much better than last time). Follow the directions and enjoy the drive.

(By the way, you can read a bit about this years trip through and the rock climbers we saw, here on Reflections. If you happen to be interested.)

2.) A while back I asked here about driving and towing from Kanab to Page via 89 or 89a and if there were any problems with that. No one here on the MOC mentioned any issues. But, there is a problem. See, back in 2010 they had a major road collapse on 89a, south of Page. You can read about it here. Or search for 89 road collapse yourself.

Seems the state of Arizona paved what was 20?? And it is now considered 89T, and is open and that is now the route. You can read about that here. There is a map, here.

CountryGuy and I have not driven this section of roadway yet, will be doing so, I believe in the next week or so. If I find anything further from our first hand experience, I will let you know.

Happy trails. Safe rides.

Route 89 will be reopened today, they tell us. Supposed to have happened about 4:30 P.M. The local residents are thrilled.

Carol,

Marilyn & I are heading from Vegas next month to Page. I'm not concerned about south of Page where the slide was. It looks like the drive from Kanab to Page on 89 is ok...or am I missing something?

Our plan is 15, to 9 to Hurricane. The 59/389 to Kanab and then 89 to Page.

If I understand correctly, this is south of the tunnel in Zion and should be ok to drag the trailer....???

Let me know!

Thanks,

Ken

Thanks for the info. I had always wondered if we could go through the Zion tunnel but being that we are 13'3" high and have a combined length of 57' we will have to go around. Thanks again for all the great info.

Ken, let me work on something to show you about this.

Zion tunnel is not a concern on your route, I can tell you that.

And, yes, Fire5er, your rig will NOT go through that tunnel. You are too tall and way too long. BTW, sometime in December 2014, a 18-wheeler got stuck in that tunnel. I cannot remember where I read it, maybe some of the news articles from the Zion National Park web site??

Back when I can get this prepared.

BELOW: Kanab to Page, via 89. This route is about 75 miles. There are NO road issues that I am aware of at this moment.

BELOW: This is also Kanab to Page, via 89a and the new 89T. This is about 132 miles. This is longer, AND, it is where 89a had the road collapse.

So, Ken, your proposed route is fine.

I have now posted the Leeds to Kanab portion of our trip on the blog, Reflections, The maps are here.

The route from Valley of Fire to Leeds is also there. Just a bit different than Vegas to Hurricane, but, not much.

Hope this helps.

You got that right about NOT going through the tunnel with your big rig,we went thru it 8 months ago in our Dually and had to wait for a smaller pull behind trailer and some Class C's coming thru the other side ,it was not a long wait.....We stayed at Zion River RV resort and it is AWESOME!!!! and close to the park and then we took our Dually all thru the park

We took the 89 rt from Kanab to Page and south to Flagstaff. 89T was fine and direct (a little 1 mile off main highway jog to start)
However, (I live in Mesa, AZ) I think I read a few months ago that 89 was open all the way now.

twindman

I have been researching this for the last several days. We are currently in Kanab.

Everyone, including the staff at the Grande Staircase Escalante visitor center have told us that the section of 89a that had the road collapse is closed and to take 89T. We were at the visitor center today, about 3 hours ago. The data cannot be any more current.

The campground owners here are so concerned they are handing out maps that are available everywhere in town that show the closed road and the open road.

Seeing that we have not driven the road yet, I cannot give you a first hand report, I have to believe all the locals, including the visitor center staff.

Happy trails everyone - -

Maybe I mis-heard!
But the 89T is a good road and if you are heading to Flagstaff, I think it is actually shorter. But there are a few places where the speed limit is something like 45 for several miles.
