John, we camped on the East side of Flathead Lake a few years back, we had traveled from the coast in Canada and then headed south at Osoyoos making our way down to Spokane and then to Coeur D'Alene and spent a couple of days there. We then headed east on I90 to Missoula spending a day there. We backtracked to 93 and North to Flathead where we camped for a couple of days and then into Glacier for a few days.
Your trip planning will depend a lot on how much time/travel you prefer to do in the US or Canada. There are several border entry points into Canada but once there your route West toward Kelowna is limited to a fair amount of travel on #3 highway as you head west. There are two entry points near Cranbrook, BC and heading west from there your next reasonable sized community is Creston. Heading West out of Creston you must go over the Kootenay pass, this is one of the highest passes in BC and certainly the highest on highway #3. I have pulled my 3402RL over it without problem as it is a good highway, albeit long climb up and long decent down.
Not sure what the attraction is in Kelowna for you but it is a nice area.
Happy trip planning, if you want to PM me and I can be of any help with places to see or other road information in that part of BC please do so, glad to help if I can.
