Pet Charges
In planning for our spring fling through the northwest, I noticed a few campgrounds charging by the day for pets. Can someone please explain why this is happening. Is it because they can or is it because WE the people are letting it happen. A dollar a day for my pals is a small amount for the love they provide but come on now. Just my random thoughts on the subject.

Probably a combination of because they can and because of the unresponsible pet owners. Just like Flying J has started charging to dump because of people who make a mess and drive off. I've seen plenty of folks walking their dogs, dogs do their duty and the owners look around to see if anyone saw it, if not they leave the mess for someone else to step in. Just my thoughts, and don't get me wrong, I'm not a dog hater except when they bark 24/7 and they're parked right next to me.

It's a pet, thats what the campground see it as.
As for the charge why not, if people walk there pet and dont pickup after it, and flip you off if you ask them to pick it up, (this has happened a few times so far) a fee is necessary. or better fines applied by the campground for this behavior of irresponsable persons, if that fails then they will start saying no pets allowed soon.

We quite often go with the Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Our favorite site at a local State Park is in the non-pet loop. The Cats don't go out and don't make any noise, so far we've been OK. I even asked once if we brought a bird or gold fish, would we have to be in the Pet Loops, their answer "Yes"

It's kind of like an additional charge at a motel/hotel that allow pets. Some don't want them but if you're willing to pay the high price they allow it. Some charge a minimum or nothing at all, like Motel 6, but restrict the floor or section where pets and owners can stay. I guess the same applies to cg owners. If you want your pet you may have to pay. We love our two border collies and are willing to pay a reasonable surcharge when we take them with us.

I believe that campgrounds that are doing this are just trying to increase/maintain their profit margin...many of us pick up after our pets, but for those who do not, they create an added maintenance burden for the campground...this in turn adds some additional cost. Now if all pets were as well mannered as "Baxter," there would not be an issue!

when the campgrounds charge are they going around making sure the droppings are being picked up ? if they charge then you should see no mess.if they charge and not keeping the park clean then in my opinion they are just raking in the money for nothing .just more greed.

Exactly. If they are citing the mess sometimes left then they should ensure every "mess" is cleaned up. In fact it should be part of the service if it's not just a profit grab.

I must add my 2 cents here, at some cgs, they even charge for kids, go figure! Imagine being charged just to bring our grandkids into the park?

Isn't it pretty standard to charge an additional fee for each person beyond two per unit???

Actually no, there are few cgs that charge for over two people. Most cgs are based on a family of 4.

I carry my plastic "doggie bags" in my p/u, my camper and at least 2 on my person at all times. I have a 100 pound Rottie and I don't want anyone stepping in
his gift to fertilization of the ground. It doesn't bother me to embarrass some dog owner that lets his pet poop without picking it up. I just walk up and say
"here use one of my plastic bags to p/u your mess....I see you forgot yours". Besides all the reasons given so far you have to also consider that the camp owners
receive all kinds of animal complaints from their campers some of whom are afraid of any type of dog period, no matter what breed they is. When we first had this Rottie we were camping in N.C. and walking the dog when a woman started running to her camper screaming in pure panic yelling "HELP,HELP a Rottweiller, Help".
Maybe I should mention that my rottie was 13 weeks old at the time. If she fell while running to the camper she would have put a law suit in against the campground owner. Alot of reasons we don't think of but it appears that the "failure to pick-up" is the most thought of.

If they can charge for extra people, why can't they charge for pets? It seems like $1 is pretty reasonable, when you consider all the other charges they can tack on. There are some campgrounds that don't even allow pets, and I'm sure that is because of a few pet owners who have been inconsiderate and have spoiled it for those who clean up after their pets.

The Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles California charges $52 per night weekdays or $62 per night on a weekend. They also charge: $4 extra per day for more than 2 people if over 5 years old, and $3 extra per day for each dog.
It is GREED but, if you are the only game in town you can charge anything you want.

just dont play there game.if everyone stops playing then the price will have to come down or charges dropped.but if people keep paying then they win.

My random thoughtsout of the way and now my final thoughts on the subject. I choose not to stay at campgrounds that charge for pets. Kids are one thing, pets are nothing but a money grab. I stayed at a campground that stated " campers with pets will be asked to leave if found NOT cleaning up after their pets". NO REFUNDS! I found this to be a fair contract. If more campgrounds did this we would all find cleaner campgrounds.
