Linda, I'm so sorry to hear of your accident but am thankful the injury you suffered wasn't more serious than it was. I think from now on I'll do both the sniff test, as Patodonn suggested, and also will stick the flame in the open area before I put my head down there to guide the flame to the pilot light. Thank you for the warning and I'm really glad to hear you are ok, although a bit singed.

So glad the situation was not worse, it could have been. Sounds like the detector did not go off because the gas was not there until you turned the gas on.
