How many showers?

Just a quick question. How many conservative showers can you take before your gray tank is full? If we take three shower ours is full.

Hi TBHD,
I think you sensors are probally not working right which is common, or you must be standing in there for an awful long time. We have a shut off on our shower head, we spray ourselfs down shut it off and soap up, then turn it back on and rinse off. The nice thing about your shut off on the shower head is youn don't have to adjust the water each time. I would think you would be running out of hot water first if you were using that much water to fill the tank in three showers.
Hope this helps.

Bill

It backs up into the shower pan which is the lowest drain point for that holding tank.

If I understand you the water will build up in your tub when the tank is full. If I misunderstood sory about that. I never have checked ours to see how many showers we take. I just empty when water starts to stand in tub.

Assuming your gage is right and the shower did back up, there is a quick and inexpensive solution that some of our fellow Montana owners have come up with that's quite ingenious. If you go to Camping World, for about $18, you can buy a bayonet mount gate valve. Put the gate valve on the sewer pipe and open both grey water valves. This allows the waste water to equalize between the kitchen tank and the bathroom tank. When ready to dump, close your grey water valves, connect your sewer hose, dump the black water and then open the grey water again. Your bathroom grey water tank will typically fill up much quicker than your kitchen tank. Hope this helps.

I'm thinking you are saying 3 showers EACH for a total of 6. Six showers plus water for brushing teeth, hand washing, etc is about right for Lorraine and I as well.

You understood correctly. The only real problem with this, other than standing in the water, is that if you have a loose drain connection somewhere in line, it's more likely to leak when full of water than with water just running through it.

Sounds like a good time to do a thorough plumbing inspection is during or after that sixth shower. It will either point to a problem or provide peace of mind. Either way....

Thanks everyone for the information. Our previous 5th wheel had a 50 gal tank and we could take two shower each for a total of six (3 people) without filling the tank up to the point of the tub starting to fill. Monty has a 40 gal tank and we can only take three showers and the tub is filling with water. We always try and take conservative showers by turning the water off at the handle also. We're not going by the sensors because they never seem to be very accurate on any trailer.

rames14 thanks for the suggestion. We may have to do that.

Another question along this line: when we shut off the shower water at the shower head and turn it back on, the water is always COLD for 5 to 10 seconds even though we never touch the control knobs. Does anyone else have this problem? Solution??

Noticed the same situation....What a shocker. In my 20ft. TT I did not have this occur, so was really SURPRISED when it happened in my Monty.

I have the same problem at home. It is because the cold water pressure is slightly higher that the hot water pressure, although this does not make sense, but has been measured. Thus the cold water backs up into the hot water lines just a little very slowly. The longer you take between turning the water off and back on at the shower head the longer it will take to get warm again.

Has anyone tried installing check valves just below the shower faucet? That would keep the cold water in its place

RADHAZJOE,
That's really interesting, how did you find this out? It certainly explains what happens. There is another thread current that mentions this. I always thought it was the water cooling off when not running. Is there some kind of pressure reducer in the water heater system that makes it do this? Inquiring minds want to know!

Wingnut -

There was a discussion on that last fall, with a lot of posts. You might want to do a search.

Hmmm, we are not at all conservative in our showers and can get 4 showers.

If you really need more capacity, consider installing another slide valve where the dump cap currently is. Then you can close that valve and open both gray valves and let the two tanks share capacity. We rarely come close to filling the galley tank, which is the same size as the bath tank (each is 38 gallons). We do have to be careful when in "share mode" because the kitchen sink is where it backs up when the tanks are full with them sharing. That may vary in different models. Several here have the ability to share. I learned this in this forum.

edited - hmmm, now that I've taken the time to really read all the posts in this thread I find all I did was reiterate what others already said. Sorry 'bout that.
Wingnut, we, too, have the cold water situation in the shower. It can be a shock in the winter when that water is **very** cold.

We go for the full hookups 98% of the time. For the other 2% we have one of those 30 gal portable grey water tanks for the overflow.Just dump the hrey into the 30 gal tank..hook it to the hitch and drag it to the dump station.
