RV Log

Having a new RV that only has the History I have put on it, I would like to log my travels and keep track of the statistics.
There are several paper version that one must manually add the mileage and nights spent. I am going to travel with my laptop I figure there must be a better way.
I have been working on an Excell workbook to do this. I have the layout down good. I am not good with the formulas to subtract start mileage with end mileage to get miles traveled. The program just wants to add. How do I get it to subtract C (Start miles) from D (End miles) to = E (Total miles).

Or is there a program out there already configured and all I must do is download and start useing.
I like what I have started if someone out there can show me where I am going wrong with the formulas.
The other point to useing a Excell workbook is that a PDA could be used and then synchronized to the laptop. Sounds complicated but really is not.
When I get it done I will be happy to share it with anyone that is interested. It shows miles and nights, and notes for our travels. As I get more advanced I can link this to photos as well.(I think)

Hi Rick and Wanda,

I sent you an email with the formula in it. Hope it helps. You will be able to edit, cut and paste as you wish.

In excel, the cell in which you want the answer to show up is first highlighted. You then click on the epsilon character (the funny looking E, if you are like me and did not know greek symbols) on the tool bar. I will then show =SUM()in the dialog line. You then type the formula in between the parenthesis (sp?).

Example: B1-A1

Actually, it is even simpler than that.
Excel knows when you start typing with an equals sign (=), you are creating a formula. So, for example if you want to subtract a number in cell B1, from a number in cell A1, and put the result in C1, make C1 the active cell, then simply type in =A1-B1 and hit enter, and you're done!

Now, speaking of math, here is a little excerpt I received the other day.....

Today's math students

Last week I purchased a burger for $1.58. I handed the
cashier $2.00 and started digging for some change. I
pulled out 8 cents and gave it to her. She stood there
with $2 and 8 cents. She looked bewildered, holding the
nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her
register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give
me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.
While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she
burst into tears.

The incident got me thinking about how our kids were
learning math in school (or not).

Teaching Math In 1950: A logger sells a truckload of
lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5ths of the
price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1960: A logger sells a truckload of
lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5ths of the
price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970: A logger exchanges a set "L" of
lumber for a set of "M" of money. The cardinality of set
"M" is 100. Each element is worth one dollar. Make 100
dots representing the elements of the set "M." The set
"C," the cost of product ion, contains 20 fewer points
than set "M." Represent the set "C" as a subset of set
"M." Answer this question: What is the cardinality of the
set "P" of profits?

Teaching Math In 1980: A logger sells a truckload of
lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his
profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 1990: By cutting down beautiful forest
trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way
of making a living? Topic for class participation after
answering the question: How did the forest birds and
squirrels feel as the logger cut down the trees. (There
are no wrong answers)

Teaching Math In 2000: A logger sells a truckload of
lumber for $100. His cost of production is $120. How does
Arthur Anderson determine that his profit margin is $60?

Teaching Math in 2005: El hachero vende un camion carga
por $100. La cuesta de production es . . . .

I've seen that same bewildered look when a clerk has to think a bit about the change to be returned. Never the tears, though.
