Southern Utah
I know there was a recent posting on this area but I am also planning a trip to Southern Utah this summer. I wanted to know if anyone could comment on some of the roads.
First, Route 9 across the southern boundry of Zion National Park. Is this the road with the tunnels that I would need an escort to get through?
Second, has anyone traveled across route 12 to route 24 up to route 70 bordering the northern boundry of the Grand Staircase-Escalante?
Third, has anyone pulled their Monty down to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon? It looks to me like this is down Alt route 89 to Jacob Lake then south on route 67 to the North Rim.
This is our first big trip so I need all the help I can get.
John

John, I'm pretty sure that 9 is the road with the tunnels. We took Hwy 59 out of Hurricane, south to the North Rim on 389. It's an easy drive and we saw lots of deer in the N.P. And, of course, the view was beautiful. We were heading east so this was a good place for us to see the Canyon. Hope to see it from the South Rim in April.

We were at Zion this Fall -- we stayed at the Cedar City KOA - very nice park - large sites -- easy access. We did a day trip to Zion - an easy drive --- we only had a day but would have loved to stayed longer. Not sure if you can take the Monty through the tunnels -- we were told we would have to have a special escort for just our truck as we have a dually - we opted not to go throgh the tunnel --there was so much to see throughout the loop that we drove. Lots of easy hikes or more strenuous ones if you are more fit than we are. Check out our website for pictures of this area www.wherearelesandjulie.com --- let us know if you have any further qestions.

Two years ago we stayed outside Zion's east entrance at a campground with NO amenities at all. At that time, there was a ranger stationed at each end of the longest tunnel with radios. They would hold the large traffic up and notify the person at the other end to hold the traffic. When the tunnel was empty, they would let the large vehicle (and the ton of irate folks behind them)go through until another big'un came along. I think they were charging the RV's & big trucks extra $$$ for the service to pay for the rangers' salaries.

Thanks for the help. I think we will also skip the tunnel.

Probably good decision to skip the tunnel but do not skip the drive around the loop -- absolutely amazing scenery --- so beautiful -- we plan on retrning to spend more time -- think we would stay at Cedar City KOA again --- the drive from there to Zion is also a nice drive.
