Al-Ko axels?

Has anyone had trouble with the Al-Ko axels that come on the Montys and other keystone models? On another forum people having them reported all kinds of trouble with them. I have them on our Monty but so far so good. It seems that keystone has settled with some of them but not others. Just wondering Jack.

hi, we had no problem with the six bolt Al-Ko on the 02 we just traded off, but an acquaintence did. Referencing the part number on the bearings, rating the six bolt units at 6000 pounds was on the limit. They replaced his with a 8 bolt model and all problems with tracking and tires were fixed. I suspect there was more to it, since i would have guessed that he weighted in at 14,500 base on what our 3670 weighted, but he never weighted it that i know of.

My 2955RL weighs 10.8K fully loaded. I just paid $150 to have both axels aligned. The shop stated they were out quite a bit. They liked the idea that I brought it in fully loaded. All the tires showed inside wear, even the one with less than 5K on it. They are the only shop that can handle a large RV, up here and stated this was the newest one they did, but have done several. The owner seemed quite aware of all the Keystone probs. They said the axels themselves looked OK for now. They have had to straiten a few.

We had an 02 3255RL with Al-Ko axles and did not have any axle problems that I know of. However, there have been reports that Al-Ko had a period when they manufactured some bad axles and some people have had them replaced or repaired. It may be significant that Keystone is now using Dexter axles.

In reading all the axle problems I have seen NO ONE mention that from Dexter you can get a greaseable kit from them. You replace the bolts and sleves that go into the springs. This way you can grease the springs and make work much better and no noise. Also I think that it has to keep the axles in aline. There is no wear.
I have them on my last 3 trailers[2TT&1 5th wheel]. You can NOT order from the facatory, but can have the dealer put them on or do it yourself.

Our 3295RK weighs 14,360. Keystone had Alko-Kober replace the axles awhile back. We then had them aligned since Alko didn't bother. That was $150. No problems since. Ours has about 35k to 40k miles on the trailer.

Everything you want to know about the Dexter kit can be found in the Forum in a search for "shackles". Huge amount of info, esp. from about a year ago.

We had an '04 2850 with Al-ko axels. Only one of the axels was bad. Al-ko replaced the axel and the two tires that were on that axel. The second axel was okay. They told me that late '03 models and early '04 models could have this problem, but there might be other models that had these axels as well.

Alko did have a problem for a while, we got one (actually TWO) of their problems. We got rid of two of their problems, had both axles replaced. The experience left us with definate opinions about axles and their ratings and camber. Our opinions do not necessarily fall in line with others on this forum. That is ok, we each get our own opinion!
