Brake Shoes

After 105K miles my F250 is ready for some new shoes. Does anybody recommend a good set of brake pads? Seems like several choices out there.

I agree. I'd be dancing in the street if I got 105,000 miles out of the brake pads on my truck!

I've been impressed with my pads, too. I'm at 69,000 (mostly highway miles, with some towing) and they are still going strong.

I just had the truck in for some warranty work and even the service guy said they were fine and you know they are always looking for a surprise buck. They tried to get an oil change out of me until I showed them my service record. Then they claimed "we always say that in case the owner hadn't changed the oil". He must have forgot when I mentioned I had just changed it as I dropped off the truck. I should probably post what they did - I'll use another topic.

When you get the brake pads taken care of, please post what they are and how things go.

Ceramic, I have 124,000 on my 05 D/A & have pulled in CO a lot. I have about 1/2 inch still on the pads. I should get 150,000 miles our of them & I will go back with the same thing.

I think I would use the original pads also. I had a set of ceramic on one of my cars a few years back and they would grind when you stop. They stopped good but I didn't like that grind so I pulled them and went back to original pads-I was told you need to change to rotors that are made for ceramic pads. Maybe they are better now. One good thing was very little dust comes off onto your wheels.

mobilecastle, I don't understand why they would grind. the metal to metal contact is gone. No,there are not different rotors for them,Do you know if the mechanic turned the rotors before installing pads? if not, pads could have been hitting the outer edges of the rotors. Sometimes after I plow snow my truck may sit for a week and when I move,it is just as quiet as new. The original pads would put a rust spot in the rotors and would be noisy until I drove for a while. Just my experience.

racerjoe, when I installed them I did not turn the rotors so I guess that is a possibility. when I went back to the original pads it stopped and I did not turn the rotors then either. Maybe it was just a fluke in that particular set of pads. I normally turn my rotors if I can feel it in my brake pedal-years ago I always needed to turn them. I think I would give the ceramics a shot again since they seem to last a very long time.

I believe what you were hearing was chattering. Early ceramics were plagued with squealing and chattering. One remedy was a squeeze tube of something that was applied to the backs of the pads. Now days, this seems to no longer be a problem, probably due to changes in the ceramic compound.

Go with the OEM or any good brand Raybestos or Wagner. Do yourself a favor and turn the rotors for a good brake job.

I ran ceramics on a commercial van some years ago, and they tended to last longer under heat, hard frequent stopping conditions, etc. but as a tradeoff they prematurely grooved the rotors and created excess heat there. Had to replace rotors when I shouldn't have. Regular pads didn't last as long but were less damaging to other hard parts. This would seem to carry over to our applications. Now then, I have 108,000+ miles on my TV which I also use for pulling an auto transport trailer, and the originals are "still lookin good". Maybe I drive more conservatively with age???

By all means, have your rotors turned when replacing. Don't shortcut.
