Lumbar L2-L5 Surgery Update

Well, it is all over but the healing process and getting the foot drop neutralized. From the initial doctor's appointment on the 7th to the notification that they were doing the surgery on the 8th, everything went flawlessly. I was out of bed and walking on the 9th and back home on the 10th. Still not sure of what all they did, but I have some fuzing, area cleaned out and other nuts, bolts, and stabilization procedures. I can already feel positive things happening and am hoping that I can get the foot operational ASAP so we can roll down the road again. Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts. Tim

My wife had a 5.5 hour operation on her foot last year. There is so much hardware in her foot you done won't to get in an ass kicking contest with her. She is doing great no pain. I'm sure you will to.

Been awhile since we have been online. My husband Pete recently had decompression surgery at L3 to address right leg numbness and foot drop. He had undergone fusion at L4-L5 & S1 a few years ago. Surgery was end of February. He is doing well, foot drop is improving and we are looking forward to getting back out on the road. Just picked up the trailer yesterday, had some maintenance performed that he just should not try to do this year. Best wishes on your recovery. Do the PT, don't push too hard too fast. Someone got over zealous and climbed a ladder to get on the roof at home a couple of weeks ago.

So glad to hear Pete's foot drop has been improving. As far as my back, it feels great, but as you stated, the foot drop takes time!!!! Been a little over five weeks and have finished the in home PT and get the out-patient PT eval to start there this Wednesday. To date, still cannot do much with the foot/ankle unless laying on my side and then can flex the ankle some and toes move minutely. Thank God for the developer of the leg/foot brace they issued me, gives me mobility and I can flex the foot with it. I actually got in my VW Golf yesterday and was able to work the accelerator and brake with no problem. Actually drove through the neighborhood. No, don't plan on any further driving until I see the surgeon again the end of May, but had to prove to myself that I could drive. Morale boost if nothing else! Have rented a camper site for this coming year a few miles from the coast and will have a buddy pull the rig down there with my truck next month. Little vehicles I see in my immediate future, but the truck is going to take quite a bit longer. Please keep me advised of Pete's progress with his foot drop. Tim

Tim, it has been a long time since I have been on the site. Every time I wander out, I just get itchy feet to hit the road.... I apologize for not reaching outsooner. Pete had a long summer last year of physical therapy, lots of extra time spent rebuilding his leg strength in the pool. We attempted one short trip in the trailer with friends that we had to cut short due to Pete being in a lot of pain. We then decided to try to take a short trip to the NW to see family via plane and rental car. Again, while we did get out of the Arizona heat for a couple of weeks, we had to cut our trip short and come home. After the usual rounds of another MRI, epidurals and a consultation with his neurosurgeon, Pete had another extensive surgery December of 2014. He is now on the mend after 6 hard months of PT, hernia surgery and a lot of walking. we are hopeful we can get out of Phoenix before the real summer heat and monsoons set in during July. The foot drop is a lot better, unless he is tired or sore. How are you? Hoping your recovery has gone well and that you are heading down the road.

Thanks for reaching out. The back surgery was a total success, no more problems there. The foot drop remains total from the top of the right ankle down. Cannot move the foot laterally or vertically. I call it a ten pound boat anchor but pray each day that it will come back to life. With the foot brace I have, I am foot mobile with a cane to retain balance. Sold the truck back to the dealer because I could not operate it with the dead foot and didn't want to get hand controls. We have since placed the rig on an annual leased site a quarter mile from the inter-coastal waterway near Topsail Island, NC. I feel blessed that it is only my foot and I get around fairly well. Lastly, the wife was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, stage 3A, last September and she goes in for her last chemo this coming Tuesday. It has been a year of challenges, but we all face them. Hope you get back on the road soon. We are at the rig now and it is great here. Did get a golf cart a few weeks ago which also increased mobility and socialization here. As we get older, we all face these speed bumps of life, take care and safe travels.

Tim, asks for your note. Wishing you and your wife all the best and hope you can continue to enjoy your lifestyle. Pete has had great success wi hydro therapy and strength training for his foot and leg in a pool. He has the silver sneakers benefit with his health insurance, so we go find gyms with swimming pools so he can work out. Helps with his balance as well. Have a safe and healthy summer.
