I tow between 55 and 58 for safety reasons and to not have a blow out that will tear up your RV

Going slower does not guarantee to not have a blowout...proper inflation and weight distribution are equally if not more important. We also have a TST 507 pass through tire monitor system which alerts us to any issues.

I keep it at 65. 70 if I'm passing but that is about the limit for me. Fuel is too expensive to get too aggressive.

04 Duramax

I have a 04 Duramax the camper is 2006 Montana RL3500. I have the Bullydog programmer set at Tow/Economy. I try to change tires every 3 years, which has served me well, until now. I hit a piece of wood, and boom, first flat ever on a camper.

I cruise 60-65 in the Mid-Atlantic area. States that have 70 as speed limit I might get just a little over. The max I tow is 75, the camper has MorRide axles. The truck is a Crewcab rated 12,000+, it’s a strange one because most are 11,200 pound rated.

I would check it by getting on a road without much traffic. Go 60 and hit the brakes. Turn around and try same run, only at 70 this time. How much further did it take to stop? Try it again, only bump up the speed. You will be able to set your cruising speed yourself. This way you can figure out what your safe cruise speed is for your rig.

Happy Camping

I used to tow faster, but the front of my roof kept coming loose, so I try to stay under 70.

Not exactly. Both of the reccomended tires for a Montana (GY G614 and Sailun G637) are speed rated at much more than 55 MPH.

The GY G614 is speed rated at 75 MPH

https://www.wingfootct.com/products/rv/G614.pdf

The Sailun G637 is speed rated at... wait for it..... 125/127 MPH!!!

X2. Speed is an important item but being able to stop is Paramount.

Ok, going over 100 mph? Why would you even rate a tire that high? Cause you know someone will say “well the tires were rated for a 100 mph, I thought I could go that fast”. Just cause it says, don’t do it!

When we were limited to 65 by our ST tires, that was my limit. I still stay at 65 by habit, and it feels comfortable for 15000lbs of trailer.

What I know is this: E rated tires generally are rated at 65mph Max. If you want better speed and load capacity go with G rated which are rated at 75mph Max. The G rated are usually a bit taller and have as many as 14 steel ply's.

In the great state of California, we are limited to 55 mph if you are towing a vehicle. Semi trucks are limited to 55 also. The California Highway Patrol gets a bit wigged out if they catch you towing at any speed above 62 mph. I usually set my cruise control at 60 mph and don’t worry to much about getting pulled over. If I want to go faster, I flip on my radar detector and let scout ahead for the CHiPs.

My truck runs best about 60 to 62 to stay in 6th gear. Sometimes I'll go to 70 to get by the string of trucks and keep out of the way of the 70+ crowd who are very impatient if you get in their way. Going down I-5 in Oregon and California there are way too many trucks to put up with and makes passing almost impossible. To get by a long string you have to get up to 70 so you aren't blocking the fast lane.

This chart has Virginia’s tow speed at 55. I’ve been through radar at 70. At 55 every tractor trailer on I81 will run over you. If you go by this chart you can’t pull your Montana through Virginia as only 2 twenty pound propane bottles are allowed.
Don’t take this chart too seriously.

I set cruise at 67-68 and sometimes run up to 70 or so when traffic makes that sensible but I'm not too comfy over 70. 67 seems to be the sweet spot with my truck for mileage and fewer down shifts on hills.

Set tires at 110 cold and they run 122-123 after warm up. I run East coast in climate of 50 degrees to 90 so not as much heat issue.

I share the frustration with other drivers pulling in my space cushion. Unavoidable in the Atlanta area where we spend much of out time.

We live in California and for trailers speed limit is 55. I will run 60 mph. I see guys that is out state running 65 to 70 mph. If the highway Patrol stop you it will cost you 200 to 300 dollars. So be careful when in California.

Here in Va at mile marker 130 to 140 or so on I 81 a speeding ticket will cost you from $300 to say about $5,000. It’s a safety corridor be careful.
One guy got caught at over 100 MPH and his ticket was over $5,000. He got mad wrote a letter to the editor and said he wasn’t coming back. What a shame. We sure going to miss him.

I pull mine 70-75. I've hit 80, but i backed it down. I guess being a racer didnt help, but i dont like to dawdle. I have a 3791 weighing about 15k with the Goodyears that came on it.

62-70 depending on the traffic, we typically spend 5 days going where it would take 2days ................lol
