Towing speed

Curious what speed everyone tows at I usually keep it at 65 is this pretty normal or can I go faster or should I go slower I've hit 70 without even noticing before and tows fine at that speed but wondering how the tires feel about that

Well you certainly opened a can of worms with this one. Depending on what tires you use 65 could be your max, others are good for higher speeds. The most important factor is not to exceed your tires and your comfortably. With the proper tires and a good road with a 70 or 75 mph speed limit, then if your comfortable at those speeds then I see nothing wrong with those speeds. Some will shudder at anything over 65, to each his own. What I think is most dangerous is the guy driving 10mph under the speed limit on a two lane road. Being comfortable goes a long way towards being safe.

Speed!

Me, iím Comfortable 65-70. Usually set the cruise around 68, on the open road in good weather. Another can of worms right there. Right or wrong been doing it that way for a long time. IMO

I set cruise to 63-64 and enjoy the scenery.

Depends on the speed limit for towing in your state. The ticket writers, depending, usually write for 15 over. But there are areas that will tag you for less.
Tires do factor, the faster you go the hotter they get.
The faster you go, the longer it takes to stop. Imagine having to jump on the brakes at 75mph. Or a tire blows.
The faster you go, the more fuel you burn.

62-63 is the best range for my truck to get it's best mileage when towing so I stay with that. Much less stress when driving for me at that speed, I actually arrive relatively rested.

Usually 65 or thereabouts on an interstate. Other roads - whatever feels comfortable.


A note to this - last week, no trailer hooked on, was passed on I-87, Adirondack Northway by someone hauling a large TT at probably near 85mph in a 65 area(I was at about 72mph). All I could envision was a China Bomb blowout and trailer debris scattered for hundreds of yards

Posted limit up to a max of 70. Usually set cruise at 68-70 on open road.

65. These rigs get banged around going down the road, I figure the faster you go, harder it is on the rig.

yep way to fast for comfort

I`m a firm believer of if you always run ANYTHING at it`s maximum capacity it will fail prematurely over running it at 80 %. Even my generator states to run continuously no more than 80% for maximum life of the unit. My Sailins are rated aT 70 MPH so I run 65 max. Besides far better fuel mileage with 410`s at 65 over 70 and the savings in time for a 500 mile trip to Myrtle Beach is ( based on a speed-time calculator) you will get there 33 minutes sooner. Not worth the white knuckles in today's traffic on I95 or the fuel burn difference or potential over heating the tires on a hot hot day for 33 minutes. Just my opinion of course your fuel mileage my vary.

I have noticed that the race drivers that pass me at 64 and they are going lord knows how fast - tend to be younger drivers. Lots of toy hauler trailers love to drive fast.

Around 65 depending on weather and traffic. Tires are rated higher--that is OK. Stopping distance is major issue--If I need to stop then I want to be able to stop. Also, our average driving day is 6+ hours to go about 300 miles. No need to go faster--enjoy the scenery and music.

I tow the speed I feel comfortable at. That depends on the road, traffic conditions. If the traffic is moving at 50 on a 70 MPH road I’m at 50. If the traffic is moving at 80 on a 70 MPH interstate I’m going to be at 75 to 80. It also depends on who in traveling with, my wife slower the guys in the shop faster.

Basically I travel at whatever speed I feel safe at. I have LT tires on my camper that are rated at over a hundred MPH so there is no problem there. There is more weight on my truck tires than my camper tires.

Some people think I’m nuts to pull my camper 80 MPH but I think that is safer than blocking traffic for everybody.

Timandusan's post would be the most reasonable approach. Less stress in getting going in the morning and arrivals are early in the day for the next stop. All the factors of stopping distance, tire problems and fuel consumption are within reasonable aspects. Average 50 to 60 miles in distance per hour makes for a good day.

The older I get, the faster I was. 62-65 is my max unless I'm in a real hurry. Truck seems to like running at that speed and it keeps me a little calmer. Anything faster and fuel mileage drops rapidly. Secondary roads I'll run 50-55 and enjoy the scenery; anyone that wants to pass has my blessing and I'll use turn outs if there are three or more behind me.

I like 65 or so. Better mileage and find it more relaxing than a higher speed. Also if I have to make an emergency stop I want to still be behind the guy I was following. My insurance agrees with this also.

I try to to keep it 68 to 70 on the interstate but it rarely works out that way very long. Traffic and terrain dictate my speed far more often than my preferred cruising speed.
