Dish Traveler Satelitte

My new to me Montana has the Traveler, but no receiver. The OP wanted to keep the Dish 211z receiver. I want to record. Not sure which DVR to go with or buy a external hard drive and add to the 211z. I think I would rather go with a DVR. Any suggestion which DVR.

We have had a Trav'ler since the beginning of 2013. We originally had the 211 receivers, one for each TV, and added the hard drives so we could record shows. Several years ago, a utility issue caused both receivers to fail, and new ones of the same type were no longer available, so we got two Wally's. The only thing I had to do to make them work was to install HDMI cables from the receivers to the TV's, and now the quality of the pictures on the TV's is much better. The hard drives work well with the Wally's, so we still have the DVR feature.

We have the Trav'ler with two Wally's which have 2tb USB drives. I bought the drives on Amazon for about half of what Dish wants. They work great and have plenty of space for recordings.

Do the USB drives have to be a particular kind to match with the Wally's.

Our old rig had a Traveler and an older model Hopper and Joey. On our new rig we have a traveler and the Hopper 3 and Joey. Have had 211's and Wally's in the past, but IMHO if you have a Traveler go the full route. On reflection, an older Traveler may have to have some modification to work with the newest Hopper, but would work fine with the older (not 16 recordings at a time) type.

Have had a Pathways dish and both 211z and Wally receivers. I installed an HDMI cable from the entertainment center to the bedroom tv so both can watch the same channel in HD. Both worked fine although only being able to watch one satellite at a time limited our ability to record one show while watching another.

Recently spent 2 months at a Campground, so I had Dish install a stationery dish and brought our Hopper 3 from home. What a pleasure! Other than sleeping, we watch tv more than anything else in the Montana.

Just purchased a Trav'eler and am installing it Sunday. Will keep the Pathways dish for those occasions when trees block the Trav'elers signal.

There are some limitations regarding adding hdd’s to the vip. These limitations are covered on the Dish website. Generally if you are expecting to have DVR functionality simply by adding a hdd to a receiver you may be disappointed at the results.

We went with a Hopper 3 and a couple of joeys and things function just as they did when we had our sticks and bricks. We do have a Travler which is a little different setup than the OP environment. We also do not have the Montana Key TV system which requires some additional hardware to separate the TV signal sources. This too is covered in the manuals posted on the MOC.
