Cord Reel

My Legacy cord reel will not engage. The motor is running but it seems to have slipped a gear/chain. Is this a common issue? Easily repairable?

First I've ever heard of it. Glad I don't have one.

Shoreline cord reel

My reel is a shoreline reel. I found this troubleshooting guide online. See the highlighted item below. Looks like the chain has slipped off the sprocket.

On my 2018.5 Montana 3921FB (Legacy) had the same problem. Dealer replaced the entire cord and reel with a new one under warranty. Tech who installed the new one made a couple of modifications to reel by adding a more substantial threaded rod which goes across the reel. So far so good since replacement in Sep of 2018.

I took a brief look at mine last time I was under there. I think you might have to pull the skirting down to get to the box that holds the reel. I don't know how to get the box out, I was thinking mine might be welded to the frame, but I didn't look that close. In any case, looks like a real pain.

Reel repair update

I finally figured out how to get to the reel. I had to unscrew the skirting from underneath and fold it out enough to get my head up into see the reel. The worst part was cutting the caulking at the back corner and unscrewing the plastic corner molding. (Then reattaching /caulking). The chain cover has like 10 nuts you have to basically loosen blindly. Then the chain has to be placed on the motor sprocket and put on the reel sprocket as much as possible. A push of the power button rolled the chain back on the sprocket nicely. I didn’t put all the nuts back on the cover in case of future problems. Total repair time was about 45 minutes.

cord reel

We had a similar problem with our cord reel. As it turned out, the pins in the reel shaft had fallen out and needed to be re-installed. Another example of the quality control on the production line.

I'm having the same issue. Motor runs but no movement. I had to wind the entire length back onto the reel, inch by inch, this last weekend, in the 101 degree Texas heat. I'm really considering just buying an 50amp extension cord and going with that as the reel, even when it worked, has always been a real (all pun intended) pain.

I have the manual reel - works good / but considering making that the hose reel and putting a long PCV pipe under 5er and just sliding cord in that. No more coils to fight with.

It seems one can't just hit the power recoil button and let it roll on it's own. A little help pulling/feeding the anaconda cord helps make sure things go well.
Ours did just what you described one cold spring morning while the cord was rather stiff.
Being under extended warranty I just watched the road service repair guy do as you have described to repair.
Learned something though during the process.

I have 2 ~~ one for the 50 amp cord and another for the water hose. Never a mechanical problem and is much easier than trying to coil either!

We have the manual reel for the power cord it is one of our smarter investments. Humm water hose we just fling it in the back of the truck. Will have to think about that.

Just as others have said my pins that stick out to engage the real were pushed back in the holes that they seat in and would not engage the real. This thing is very poorly made.

I think Keystone agrees. In researching the part number to add a powered cord reel the originally installed OEM (CS12D-SR) model has been discontinued from TRC. It has been replaced with a newer and significantly more expensive model RL54331LMK. Would love to know if this model has addressed the short comings of the discontinued

The one I have in my 2018 3731FL is the RL54331LMK. A simple tensioner would fix the problem as I can't imagine why the chain would have so much slack that it can jump off the sprocket. Once I remove it I'm going to see if the gear box cover can just be left off so the chain can be accessed without have to remove the entire reel from the RV.

The model RL54331LMK is also a problem reel. Chain and pins falling out and terrible accessibility to get at. I am going to try to get at ours but it looks like a pain!

Hi Al,
I was reading thru the forums about the cord reel as mine just broke. I noticed you have the 3921 which i have the 3931. I believe the reels are in the same spot, about half way up the rig. Did you ever get to yours and if so how tough was it. Sitting at a campground 500 miles from home and mine just went. Hear the buzz but reel does not spin. I was looking at cutting out the false floor in the compartment over the reel box to get to it.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, the cord reel on pure was in far rear driver side corner. You have to cut some caulking and remover outer tin to access the reel. Not a real big project, probably a couple hours. On ours there are six drive pins on the motor clutch that fell out otherwise you can try to reel it in by hand
