USB wi-Fi adapters are priced from about $35.00 and up. I bought a nice one (ZyXEL AG-225H) for $70.00 at Office Depot that has a small lcd screen that shows you what is available and how strong the signal is even when it isn't plugged into a laptop. Any USB or PCMCIA card will do the job but an interesting option is if you can find a USB or PCMCIA card that can add an external antenna you can increase your range dramatically. I was recently at a conference demonstrating what can be done with WiFi. At the end of the session we went out onto the plaza and using a directional antenna (they cost less than $100.00) picked up over 200 open networks some about a mile away!
At a campground you can guarantee a good signal if you point the antenna at the wireless access point.
