Extra charge for 50 Amp - Montana Owners Club

On our recent trip we only stayed at two campgrounds that had 50 amp service and they both wanted extra money for this. One was 2 dollars a night more, one was 3 dollars. I did not bother because we had found 30 amp was all we needed if we used our furnace on propane. I thought about it after and now that propane is so expensive, I might have been further ahead just using my electric heaters. Any thoughts on this and is it the standard practise for a CG to charge extra for 50 amp?

As a footnote, we had a few nights where it went down to 24 F so we had to run our furnace to keep the water lines from freezing.

Well just when one thought he had heard it all... I have heard of charging more for pull-thru sights, but now more for 50amp vs. 30amp? I guess the campgrounds just figure rv'ers are rich and will just pay for anything! I am afraid to ask, whats next?

None of that should come as a surprise.The high cost of energy affects everything we do.It is not only the high cost of fuel. C'G's are affected by high energy cost and they must pass them on to us.I mentioned before that many CG's are going to a flate rate then charging extra for add on's More for 50A mp service,More if you say you will use the A/C, More if they note that you have 2 A/ C's, They will ask if you have a W/ D and charge you a extra fee for water. Pull through at C.G's have in our experience always been more expensive. The high cost of energy will have a significant impact on our travel plans and as most of you begin to get those campers out and begin traveling you may be in for a bit of a shock.

On our recent trip, there was a difference at one place that I know of. We checked in after office hours, and when we left the next morning, they asked me if we used 30 or 50 amp and I said "I don't know. I didn't plug it in." So he just charged me for 30 amp!

I guess it is a good thing I stay at the same park for 6 months at a time. They charge $585 for the month, and that includes water, electric, sewer, garbage, and lawn care.

We had the same thing happen in south carolina, When we arived it was late so when we left the next day we stopped at the office to pay and they asked what power we hooked up to 30 or 50. Lisa said she did'nt know so he just charged us for 30 amp. I did hook up to 50 but we only have the one a.c. so all we used was 30 amps of power. I just cant see when you pay for A big rig pull thrue site what does it matter what plug you used.

Well I see my DW all ready told that story. I started this A few hours ago, Been dealing with custormers ever sence. Know you heard it twice. LOL

This is not all that unusual a practice ... we've seen it occasionally in campgrounds all across the country and not just recently either. In fact, Steve had quite a "discussion" with one park owner who was going to charge us simply because we HAD 50 amp ... even though we were going to use our 50-30 amp adapter on our end. (By the by ... we only paid for the 30amp.)

We almost always hook up on 30 amp and still run two small electric heaters ... one on high, one on low. No problem as long as they're on different electrical circuits.

I have heard of campgrounds charging extra for a second air conditioner. Again say principle flat rate for guessed usage.
The comment about price brings to mind the hassle Maryland is going through right now over the cost of electricity in July. I am hearing up to a 75% increase. It may be over the next 10 years. I do not have all the facts because of being down under.

We expect to pay more for 50 amp service as that is what we've seen in most campgrounds. The 2 or 3 dollar increase is what we've seen. After a few days here in hot Texas, we're talking about getting a second air conditioner but we would only hook up to 50 amp service when it was hot. Otherwise, we do fine with 30 amps.

I guess it just depends on the campgrounds. This is the first one that 50 was more than 30. I notice a lot of the PA parks charge extra for electric when using the PA discount.

We've found that it is NOT at all unusual for parks to charge extra for 50amp service. We generally get just the 30 amp since that will run everything we need.

Whether connected to 30 or 50 amp, aren't you still using the same amount of electricity? The 50 amp source just makes more amerage available.

The campground assumes that if you are Plugged into 50 amp you will use it. Same as if you have 2 A/C's or extra water for a W/D. Campgrounds are so untrustful..We know that Rv'ers would not say they would not use extra amps or water or run the A/C then go ahead and do it..now would they???

We've run into many campgrounds that charge extra for 50 amp....and for pulls throughs, cable, sewer, etc. Actually, I have no problem with the extra charges, some are very turned off by the extra charges. The way I see it, we're only paying for the services we use. I'd rather not pay $35 for a quick overnight stay if I can do without the "extras" and pay only $25.
