Buying new tires

Buying new tires soon currently have Ranier ST 23580r16 e rated but they are original and want to replace before we take off in a month. Have a 2016 montana high country 305rl and want good tires any suggestions on brand rating to go with?

If you search Sailun on the site, you will see they are the preferred tire of most on here.

They are a very good G rated tire at a very reasonable price. If you can't find a local tire store that sells them, Simple Tire is the way to go.

Don't tow any further with the tires you have. RV tires age out, not wear out and yours are way too old and weren't good tires to start with. Sailuns or Goodyears are what you need.

We just replaced our with Goodyear Endurance ST 235/80/R16E
We did a fair amount of research for our Montana HC.
There may be more information that will be posted about other's choices. Everything depends on what will be safe for you and your rv.

Thanks all and yes they are old I was worried about rotting on the inside so debated my husband strongly on new ones. He finally agreed so I'm on the hunt. I'll check into the ones you all mentioned and appreciate the assistance!

Your current tires are providing more than 15% in load capacity reserves at 80 psi which is more than the RVIA recommendation for OE tires. To exceed that 15% you would have to increase the current tire size load capacity with a LRF at 95 PSI; or go with another size such as the ST235/85R16 LRE rated at 3640# @ 80 PSI. Those are a taller tires. If your axle spacing is 33” center to center they should work.

Keep in mind when shopping for ST235/80R16 LRE tires that your current tires provide 3520# of load capacity at 80 PSI. The popular replacements, Goodyear & Maxxis only provide 3420# OF LOAD CAPACITY AR 80 psi. The Carlisle & Greenball Task Master both provide 3520# at 80 PSI. Tire industry standards say that replacement tires MUST have a load capacity equal to or greater than what the OE tires provide/provided.

If you check past posts on the forum, you will see that while those tires claim to have a higher load capacity they are well known for failures. The government does not require trailer tires to have any reserve capacity like they do passenger carrying tires so you have to take those numbers with a grain of salt. Also, if the tires do fail check on how good the manufacturers are at, at least partially, making you whole. They are for sure not the same.

Thank you. We're calling the dealer near us tomorrow to make an appt and ask a lot of questions. We know if we order the tires and ship them to this dealer they'll install for us so hoping they will answer the remaining questions we have as well.

In the eyes of the industry a tire is what it says it is on its sidewall. That load capacity reserve you speak of is done with inflation pressures for all tires. The FMVSS standards require the automotive industry to provide load capacity reserves via recommended cold inflation pressures for automotive Original Equipment tire fitments. That same standard does not apply to RV trailer tire OE fitments. However, in a widely publicized recommendation from the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), all 2016 and later model RV trailers will have at least a 10% load capacity reserve in all OE tire fitments from the factories.

New tires installed

They're on goodyear st23580r16 e I feel better about leaving in a couple weeks as we have new tires on my truck and the montana. Think we got a good deal on them at 147 per tire at a goodyear commercial. Thanks for all the advice.

I also highly recommend the Sailun tires for the replacing the OEM Rainier tires. I replaced my OEM Ranier's with Sailuns from Simpletire.com for under $145/Ea (delivered). Sign up for text/ email specials and you'll save a bundle and have the safety and piece of mind of a great trailer tire.

Does anyone happen to know what size socket I should get to attach to the torque wrench for checking the lug nuts each time we go out? Should I also get an extension or is it better to attach wrench right to socket?

Tredit sells a Salins 235/80r16G that should work on your rig. Gust had them installed on my 331Rl. and no you do not have to run them at the 110 lbs, if your rims are not rated for that pressure. I think that they are.

For years now g614 or saliuns have been the recommended tire for these trailers.

When we bought my HC it had the Rainier tires. I pulled it 43 miles to have Sailun tires installed. My new Montana arrived with Sailun from the factory.

I just put new shoes on my '04 3295RK. Drove myself crazy searching out brands, LT vs ST, etc. I could find an argument for anything I wanted to persuade myself of.

I took off LT 235/85R-16 that looked like brand new! Only thing is I looked at the date code on the tires (I bought the rig 3 years ago) and the tires were 1908's (19th week of 2008)! 11 year old tires are an accident waiting to happen!

Finally just asked my dealer what he recommended and told him I am going on a 1200 mile trip through ND and SD in a couple weeks in 90º heat and if I had a blow out that messed up my pristine Montana I was going to hold him responsible! He would have to come out and fix it :-) for starters!

He talked me into Towmax 235/80-16's (ST Tires) because of the stiffer sidewall and a little increased capacity.

I am glad to see (post above on Keystone Warrantys) that Towmax tires come from the same corporation as do the beloved Sailuns. Maybe I have a chance!

Might be same company but from my understanding different factories. Tow Max still has a bad reputation in my mind. Nothing but Sailun comes out of the Sailun factory and they are just keeping up with orders.
Actually, wondering what LR your Tow Max are. A little searching and you will see them referred to as Blow Max. Maybe things have changed. Wish you the best with them.

Yup... did some quick reviewing as they were mounting them. Saw many reviews + or - on then, many strongly worded both ways. Problem is I could find that with every tire I looked at! All of the bad reviews I saw were 2015 and older.

In the end, I had to go with dealer recommendation Towmax has a 2 year warranty on tire failure during the first 2/32 of tread life, and free roadside assistance that I won’t need . I’m more worried about damaging the coach.
