Montana 3400 Comments

Yes it does. If you look at the top of this screen you will see the search. Click on that and type in what you are looking for. By the way, we have the 3400RL what exactly did you want to know about this fine model? Kathi

Have it, love it! Yes the 3400RL is still in production. Last I had heard it was Keystone's number 1 selling floor plan for the second year now.

JUST found some of the comments. It appears the 3400 has the following we were expecting. Guess we just needed the comformation we made a good choice. Enjoyed our 2002 2955RL and the extended time in it last Sept-late July. New one comes next week. Thanks for the comments here and forum.

We were at the factory about 3 weeks ago and that model was the one that they had the most of in production. It was great seeing the 3400RL, one like we bought, being made. Yes it is still in production, and yes we love ours. Just spent 3 months living in it and it was wonderful. Pulls like a dream. I needed to look in the review mirror every once in a while to make sure it was still there.

You are going to love it. I don't remember any - comments about the 3400. As you can see those of us that have them, love them. Have fun in your new castle on wheels.

same here!! we love our 2005 3400RL, it had a few bugs that we had to have fixed but we love the unit!

I am looking at the 3400RL now. Both my wife and I like the floorplan. The only this that I worry about is can I tow it with a 2005 Dodge 2500 Diesel quad cab short box. I will be new to RVing. Also, I don't have a hitch installed, any ideas would be welcomed.

DinPd you have just sufficient vehicle as a TV for the 3400. We have the 3500 short box and the additions I would recommend are:

Hitch - must be the Pullrite superglide - a lot of hitch (more money than an "ordinary" hitch) but a lot cheaper than replacing the back window of the Truck!

Air bags - we had Firestone air bags fitted into the suspension - gives the ability to "tighten" up the ride. Made for a much smoother ride. Major difference between 2500 and 3500 Dodge is the suspension and wheel size so you are on the edge for capacity - don't overload with too much stuff! Unless you intend to be up and down the Rockies or up to Alaska for my money you are just about OK provided you add the airbags.

Brake controller - don't go cheap - we installed a Prodigy (dealer had installed Voyager and we had him pull it out and replace - just a few dollars difference but a world of difference in ease of use).

BTW -we also love our 3400RL - it is very obvious why it is the most popular model from the Montana plant!

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and also the new owner (today) of a 2005 Montana 3400RL. My wife and I love the floor plan. Looking forward to our first trip at the end of this month.

We have had no issues towing the 3400RL with a Silverado 2500HD short bed quad cab. It is a great unit. We did overheat a few times towing above 8,000 feet and had to let her cool down a little, but we had four adults and packed for a three week trip. We have had our unit about a year now. This forum will give youlots of insight into the best of worst of all of the units. We really enjoy ours. Best of luck.

You really got my attention on your duramax over heating! Could you please give more detail, like air temps, grade, how long you were pulling the grade, speed. You are the first person that I have heard of with a duramax over heating. I pulled a 5 mile grade at I think 7% with three adults and air temps of 106, the engine temp never went of 220 and the tranny temp hit the hottest I have seen yet at 180. Did get the EGT to 1,150 and just backed the foot off a tad and it came right back down to 1,000 degrees. I was pulling the grade at 48mph. Your overheating makes me curious.

I'm curious as to where your EGT sensor is mounted. Is it in the exhaust manifold or closer to the turbo? Ours is mounted in the manifold at the #8 cylinder and I can easily hit 1300-1350 degrees with a load going uphill if I don't watch it.

Mine is located in the same place as yours. I have seen temps hit as high as 1250 but that is where my redlines at, I try to stay far away from that as possible.

What's the hitch weight for the 3400RL? The literature says 1770# and the link in this forum says 2300#. Which one is correct?

I suspect the forum number is a typo since the 3295RK just above it shows 2300. The keystone website says 1770.

What link are you referring to that indicates the 2300# hitch weight figure?

I spoke with the factory yesterday about the 3400RL. I was told that the weights listed in the latest brochure were typically within 50# of actual: hitch = 1770#, UVW = 11380#. These weights assume the Moving to Montana and Value upgrade packages have been installed, but with no other options.

I have also been told by other 3400 owners that cargo added for traveling typically adds in the range of 3 to 3.5# in hitch weight for every 10# added. Thus, carrying 2,000# of traveling goodies could increase the hitch by as much as 700#, or up to 2470#. Of course, the actual hitch weight increase would depend upon where the added load was stored.
