San Diego
We are planning to stay in San Diego in late March early April 2010. Anyone have some suggestions on where we could camp. Once we have visited that area we would like to see San Francisco with some friends at which time we also would like to take in a tour of a vineyard

If you don't mind crowds (kids/famlies) and being smack dab in the middle of everything there is also Mission Bay RV Park or Campland by the Bay. But during that time frame most of the families are in school and work and hopefully these two won't be so bad.
If I recall, the Chula Vista RV Park recommended by gitrdun is more mature guest wise. It's been years since I've been there.

If you don't belong to PassportAmerica join before you go. San Diego has some great RV parks offered and you will save alot more than the cost of membership($45 a year). I believe Campland on the Bay is like 60-70$ per night and it is half price with PA. Check out thier web-site. Teresa

My wife grew up in Chula Vista. All our kids were born in Chula Vista. Vicki still has family in Chula Vista. But one time we stayed at Bernardo Shores RV Park in Imperial Beach at the head of the Silver Strand. The other times we stayed at Circle RV Resort in El Cajon. We prefer quieter parks with few or no little ones running around and we also prefer lower prices than some of those other parks, although neither of these were cheap. Just personal preferences for these older citizens

Thank you all for the info. I am a PA member and will utilize this membership. Yes Nova Scotia is a long way. We camped in California with our kids 30 years ago when we lived in Alberta. Although we never went down as far as San Diego we will on this trip

Wine country RV parks are scarce in N. California. There is a decent KOA in Petaluma (about 20 miles north SF) and 15/20 miles from Sonoma wineries. Check out Matanzas Creek, near Santa Rosa or Seghesio in Healdsburg, along with two dozen others. Not many offer vineyard tours, but do have tasting rooms. Santa Rosa fairgrounds has an RV park, but it is gravel and crowded, cheek-to-jowl. Napa has several small RV parks, one adjacent to the state mental hospital, but also close to the wineries. The Napa fairgrounds, in Napa, has a decent RV park, but it is small and first come, first serve. The Napa County fairgrounds in Calistoga (confusing, isn't it?) take reservations. The RV park is gravel, but well maintained. Calistoga is a great little town with tremendous restaurants at the north end of the Napa Valley wine region. There are many wineries withing 20 minutes of Calistoga. It would be my first choice for a wine country trip. If you want to venture further afield, east of Sacramento, in Plymouth there is Far Horizons RV Park. Plymouth is the gateway to the Amador/El Dorado County wine areas. The wine is good and the tasting rooms are free, unlike Napa and Sonoma.

The KOA in Placerville is up that way. Good wineries in El Dorado County. We like Boeger the best. You will also be near Coloma on the American River where they discovered gold that started the gold rush. A lot of history in that area.
