Diesel Exhaust Fluid
Learned a good lesson over the past week. I bought 2 gallons of DEF at the Santa Fe Ford dealer--$51 with a fill kit. I just bought 2.5 gal at Auto Zone in Alpine, Tx, with fill kit for $12! What is the lesson?

Dealer prices on products are like CW products, highly inflated. When I bought my truck the salesman specifically told me to not buy DEF from his dealership, but use Walmart or any auto parts store. Said the same thing about CTAN/fuel additive.

Love's now has it at the pump at all locations, $2.70 or so per gallon. Had to get a ring to fit over the nozzle so it would work, but they provided. May not go out of my way but for DEF it easy and cheap, and will stop when going by. Now diesel is another issue.

Bought 2.5 gal DEF with a screw on nozel at Walmart in Montana, Washington, Nevada and Arizona for just under $12.00. However, I found that all Walmarts do not carry DEF.

Yup the Ford dealer is a much more expensive place to get DEF than anywhere else. *BUT* if you bought the Ford filler hose (it has its own part number) KEEP IT!!!!! The cheap hose supplied in the DEF box leaks more often than not. The Ford hose is better designed and works much better.
P.S. The last box of DEF I bought came from Penzoil and not Blue DEF. The Penzoil container has an air bleed built in which really made it easy to get all the fluid out of it.

When looking for the MH we currently have, one requirement was a pre DEF engine.

Something to say about that Ford dealer in Santa Fe. I have never paid more than $14.95 for 2 1/2 gallons at any Ford dealer and I have been to a number of them in different locations. That been said Wal Mart is even cheaper.

Thankfully, I don't use DEF with our truck, but on the Diesel forum, I have seen posts that it seems to have a fairly short shelf life, which leads to problems. For that reason, if was using it, I would try to make a habit of buying where they sold a lot (thus a high turnover) and avoid stocking up if I found it cheap or on sale.

I just check my display every once in a while and if it shows DEF less than half I will stop and buy 2 1/2 gallon jug and pour it in. If we have a long trip planned I will buy enough to make sure it is full and carry any extra left over in the truck.

Hi
My Chevrolet dealer prices are competitive with the market.
I get all of my service work done at the dealer and their prices match the Quick Change oil change companies.
Even their tire prices are competitive with my commercial tire dealer I have been doing business with for 50 years.

I check prices all over on DEF. Auto Zones and others, sometimes WalMart, are usually cheaper. I have a long skinny funnel that fits perfectly into my F350 DEF fill hole so I seldom purchase the containers with the fill hose included.

I dont think I want a new truck now.
The thought of paying more for fuel when you combine the price of DEF. I dont know how many miles per tank full a person gets when useing DEF, it dosen't sound like very much.
It also is a shame that a dealer will put the screws to their customers and over charge them.
Isn't the automotive industries being looked at right now for just that, over charging for Parts?
It looks like the top three sellers are Wall-Mart, Loves, and Piolet/Flying J.

Tom, Just happened to see this earlier today. Thought it might be helpful to share......
• If Diesel Exhaust Fluid is kept to temperatures between 10 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, it will last a minimum of 1 year without problems.
• Big bulk dispensers (1,000 gallons) have internal climate control systems.
• In cold temperature regions it is recommended to store Diesel Exhaust Fluid in a storage unit. In warm temperature regions it is recommended to store Diesel Exhaust Fluid in a shaded area.
• New climate control systems specifically for Diesel Exhaust Fluid are being developed.
• Additional information about handling and storing Diesel Exhaust Fluid can be found here.
