Electric Water Heater

Recently I noticed that my hot water heater has an electrical switch near the drain, with a clip through it to keep it off. So I removed the clip and flipped it on. Electrically heated hot water! Wonder how I missed that before.

The manual for the heater doesn't mention anything about using this feature. So I now use electric most of the time, but kick on the gas when I need hot water faster (for the next person to shower).

So finally my question. A service guy suggested not using both electric and gas at the same time, but he didn't mention why. Does anyone have a reason why this might be harmful?

Just148, like Dennis (HamRad) we leave the water heater on. Only time it's turned off is when we're on the road. If we're not paying for electricity and it's warm weather then we use only the electric heater. Otherwise we run both gas and electric. In our 3295RK the heater is at a back corner and in cold weather it loses too much heat by the time it gets to the shower and bathroom sink. Hate to shave with lukewarm water and don't like electric razors. Naturally, I also turn it off when I periodically (couple times per year) when I drain, clean, and refill the water heater and check the anode rod.

Thanks, all. I keep it on when using electric.
