Storage behind fireplace

Sitting here looking at the fireplace, it occured to me that there is a lot of empty space behind it (In a 2010 3150RL)Has anyone tried cutting a door in the side of the slide so you could store light weight lawn chairs, etc in this area? Do you think it could be a feasible mod?

I just looked at a floorplan of your unit and see that there is quite a large area there. If it were mine, and I was considering cutting in a door, there are several things I would do before beginning the project. The first thing I would do is go out on a cool morning after a heavy dew and try to see condensation on the side of the slide where you want to put the door. The side of the slide should be wet except for where the vertical aluminum studs are located. You need to see where the studs are to be sure you will not cut into one. The second thing is to check with the dealer or an aftermarket RV store to make sure there is a door kit available in the size you want. Other that, I see no reason not to go for it. You may want to pull the fireplace and install a wall behind the fireplace and also check for wires that may be in the area where you are cutting. One more thing. Check the distance between the side and the unit opening to be sure the door latch on the new door will not hit the door frame when extending or retracting the slide.
If you do the project, please post pics. This would be a very interesting mod.

I too, have a large area behind our fireplace. My dealer has extra Montana cabinet doors, that I may get & cut a hole under the desk area. Good place for Christmas items or blankets & stuff.

I was just wondering why something like this wouldn't work for an outside access. They are flush mounted and waterproof. I've used them on boats for access to areas that were otherwise inaccessible.
