East Entrance to Zion National Park

I am planning to visit Zion National Park in October. We will be Driving HWY-89 from Lake Powell. I know there is a tunnel on this drive. I just want to make sure this will be an ok route. I thought I had read at one time from other members that this can be done with our 5er's. Any help on this travel route would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Keith

Been there and done that. I am 13.5 tall and had no trouble with the tunnel. Can't say that for a bridge in New York

Here is a link to the Zion tunnel. I know people have said they towed thru it. But the link states that rigs over 13'-1" high or having a combined length over 50' are prohibited. May just depend on the person on duty that day. But be prepared for that possibility.

If you look at google maps street view, you can see the signs that state a clearance of 13'-1" center height of the arch and 11'-4" at the edges.

Thanks BB TX. I saw 13.1 height and thought I'm OK but not so fast. I'll be taking my MH and it's over 7.11 wide so I may need a permit.

We went through there in April and we seen them make motor homes turn around when heading in from the east.. What I seen them doing is they stop traffic if you were close to 13' 1" and let you run through the the center of the tunnel.. I would also be ready to turn around if needed..

As I recall, you can take an oversize (up to 13' 1") RV through there. However they have to stop traffic in both directions (which does tend to irritate some folks) and there is a $15 charge for the service. You will need to obtain a "tunnel permit" when you enter the park.

Thanks to all who replied on this! Time to get out the measuring tape to see if I can get thru. I called Zion park info and got a ph no. for tunnel info. 435-772-0177 for any one that may have any other questions.

Always the best info, THANKS!

We took our dually trucks through there. I would not take a rig.

It's not just the tunnel, it is the serpentine road on the west side of the tunnels that you have to navigate.

Many of our friends think we are bonafide crazy for taking that truck on some of the roads we do, of course we are crazy.

But, to repeat, we would NOT take our rig through here, that is just TOOOOOOO crazy even for us.

Plus the fact that we are 53 foot running when hooked up. Still, taking the truck down and up that serpentine road on the west side of the tunnel was a challenge, we had to make VERY long turns, aka, crossed over the line a number of times.

Good luck, enjoy the ride. There are alternative routes and having driving a couple of them, I have to say, they are just stunning and I am not sorry we used them. Something to consider.

Since the tunnel is always one way in the day time you shouldn't have a problem if you meet the height criteria, but I'm with others: find a campground to base out of and enjoy Zion in your truck. It will be much less stressful. Then go around Zion if you're heading west via US 89 to Utah 14 over Cedar Mountain and into Cedar City. And stop at another of Utah's phenomenal spots - Cedar Breaks.

If you go to Cedar Breaks, be prepared for an elevation over 10,000 ft. I like windy, twisty roads, but if you don't you may not want to stop at Cedar Breaks.

Thanks again to everyone for chiming in on this subject. Soooo another question. Looking at the maps for an alternate route with not many options for me to go with. As I stated earlier I will be at Wahweap marina campground at lake Powell. The only other possible route I see is drive to Kanab then head south in to Arizona, thru Colorado city, over to I-15. Has any one ever taken this route? Roads seem to be sparse in that part of south west.

Thank you to all, Keith

Keith, we drove that route, only the other direction last time we were out there.

IT IS GORGEOUS!! Kanab was wonderful. St. George area was wonderful.

OKKK, it's all wonderful, in my opinion, you cannot go wrong. Unless you take that tunnel.

Went we went through the tunnel this spring it was not one way traffic durning the day time hours. When we went east from the west entrance they had the traffic stopped for a Class C motor home but when we came back through an hour later they were running the traffic both ways.. This was about 9:30 am..

We entered zikn through Hirricane, La verkin. Great rv place at zion river resort just outside of the park at la verkin. I went through the tunnel with my dually, but the hairpins on the downhill side are not made for our larger rig lengths.

Took the southern route towing my boat without any problems, but that twenty or so years ago. You could also go North on 89 to 14 or 20 to get over to the 15.

The highway from Kanab south through Fredonia and Colorado City to Hurricane is good road. There are a few grades but no problem. As said, Highway 14 over the top of Cedar Mountain does have some twisty turns but spectacular scenery. We will be there in September and I will pull east on Hwy 14 to 89 to our cabin north of Glendale. We have pulled trailers on that route since 1970 (much smaller trailers and a lot less horsepower back then )

Thanks again to everyone for all the great input on this. Zion River resort will be our stopping point. Awesome place! Repeat customers get 15% off, what a deal.
I think we will be taking the southern route through Colorado City then take the tunnel with pickup with out the 5er.

Thanks to All!!
