Central NY Campground
Greetings, My wife and I are looking for a nice campground to spend a day or two at in Central NY. We will be on our way to Niagara Falls Campground and was looking for some place about half way to spend a little time at. We found a place called Cheerfull Valley Campground in Phelps NY, and was wondering if anyone here has been there, or would reccomednd a campgound not too far from I-90. Will not go back to Association Island as we had a pretty bad experience there the last time. Looking for something between Utica and Rochester.
Thanks

Bobsals,
Really depends on the time of year as a lot of the Central NY CG's are close for the winter or at least have no water until spring.
We have stayed at the Turning Stone Casino RV Park off exit 33 on I-90. I believe they open 4/19.
Here is the link: http://www.turningstone.com/stay/envillagesrvpark.php
Good Luck,
Les

Forgot to mention that we will be traveling in the summer 2013, probably June or July.
Thanks

Also in the Phelps area is Junius Ponds Campground. It's close to I90, as you can see it. A little noisey because of the truck traffic on 90. It's between Syracuse and Rochester. We've also stayed at Turning Stone, they offer a free shuttle to the casino.

Turning stone, good choice. Also look at Sampson state park. Was an old base, has excellent power and large sites. It is about 2 hours from Niagara Falls
Also forgot to say you would be in the middle of finger lakes wine country a lot to do

We like Sampson but the most direct route from the north has a marked bridge with a low overpass, don't recall the height but we had to detour.
Been a few years since we stayed at Cheerful Valley. We stayed with our daughter's entire softball team.
Turning Stone is very nice and pretty close to I-90, a mile or two at most.
A KOA is in Herkimer, although we haven't stayed there.
Junius Ponds is also close to I-90 and we haven't stayed there either. I could see it may have a bit of noise from the highway.
From our experiences, Turning Stone is the nicer and closest to the highway, with Cheerful Valley a second.
Good luck, Mike

When we go to Niagra Falls we stay at Four mile creek state campground, its great its right on Lake Ontario we always try and get camp site 240 , they only have 30 amp and no water at site but you can fill up in a lot of spots. its about 6 or 8 miles from the falls. We love it there. http://www.reserveamerica.com/campin...ex=CampingSpot heres the reserve Americsa site.

Also recommend Turning Stone. If you are into casinos shuttle bus runs 27/7.

We have camped at the Herkimer KOA twice. It is a very nice campground right on what I believe is called the West Canada Creek. In the summer, they release water from a dam up river and it makes for great tubing rides. You can go "Diamond" hunting if you wish but on our second visit we pounded rock for hours but came up empty. First visit was fruitful. Nice restaurant across the street. You can also cruise the Erie Canal in the town of Herkimer. The campground is about 4-5 miles north of the town on route 28.

Bob, another thought. If you happen through the area in mid June you can join 3000 to 4000 other RVers and the Good Sam Rally at the State Fairgrounds outside Syracuse.
As for Samson, yep bridge marked 12'6". The big rigs do go under and I understand the clearance was lower because of long loads, since the road dips under the RR tracks and long loads would get hung up. We when aroung rather than risk it.
