galley holding tank
I have discovered a crack in my galley holding tank. How can a tank crack in the top corner? This is on my 2010 montana 3400rl. Anyone else experience this problem?

Many of us unfortunately. The cause is flexing of the full/empty tank and the rigid drain piping. The drain piping acts like a lever and cracks the spud, or area around it.
The fix is possible, and not bad of a job. I will see if I can find my fix-it-slideshow.
Drain the tank a while before the fix.

Unfortunately an not uncommon issue. As shown in Ozz's fix, be sure and use a rubber coupling when you finish the repair to prevent a recurrence.

I just read your post again, one of my faults is not reading carefully. You did say top corner. Never seen or heard of that before, I see how you were amazed at that. Wow.. well, it could be the flexing, I don't see how else other than a defect from the molding of it. Same fix method, and I would go ahead and do the couplers.

Cracked tanks was an issue brought to the attention of Keystone at the Fall Rally. One of the attendees had talked with the tank manufacturer who told him that the tanks are supposed to be secured in place under the coach. Keystone simply lays the tanks in the available space in the frame. It is possible for these tanks to move somewhat laterally as we travel. Don't know whether this movement is causing the rash of cracked tanks, but it certainly is a possibility.

Well, my Black tank cracked on the top corner, on the opposite side of the tank from the piping. Mine was cause by the main support not being strong enough and saging in the middle, putting to much wieght on the corner. I sealed the tank and then added a large angle iron to the support and hopped that would be enough.
Also, I try not to travel any farther than I have to with a full tank.
Hope that gives you another option.

I think it is mainly just the tanks are not of very good quality. When my galley tank went we were sitting still and it was not just a leak, it was a Tsunami. Granted my tank was full but I didn't read in the manual where it says do not fill holding tanks to full????? Patching was not an option as the repair guy said it was split wide open......

I think our tanks, except for the fresh water, are all abs and made whereby a thermal mold forms the bottom part of the tank of the tank complete with sides and an outward flange at the top...then another sheet of abs is laid on the top and bonded to form a complete tank. I can tell you for sure that if you fill these tanks until water stands in the galley sink or standing water in the shower...then you are stressing them and they can eventually fail. This is what happened to our galley grey tank...a few times with standing water in the sink, then one day there was a pop noise and a week or so later a cascade of water as the bottom of the rig dropped on one side. How is this possible, one may ask, well...when the cheap crappy tank monitor that is installed by most rv manufacturers!!! Now I feel better...and I can now read that my galley tank is 43% full, my shower grey tank is 20%, and my black tank is 51% full! Thanks to the Iseries tank monitor that I have installed. John

I would think that Keystone should be made to repair this issue with cracked tanks. Inferior material and bracing issue.
Sorry but I would really not consider a Keystone when upgrading my 5th wheel.

HMMMMMMM and you think Other SOB's don't use the same Tanks and mount them the same way??? Go to some other SOB forums and you will hear the same complaints,I am not saying it is right what Keystone does but it is pretty much standard practice

I remember when holding tanks were Indestructible they were made from a hard black rubber and were almost 3/16 of an inch thick and I never had one rupture or brake . but with all manufactures trying to get rid of weight they have gone to ABS plastic that stretches' and is flexible when full, the factory put a pressure test on them and they look like a balloon during the test. they are a lot thinner than the early tanks. and a junky construction.

This is not the only issue with Keystone. But you are right, I imagine all of the rv companies use the same tanks.
