furnace noisy

We rarely use the furnace as we don't pay for electric, but when it does run, it is very loud. The combination of air inlet noise and fan noise seems excessive. I don't believe there is anything malfunctioning, it's just noisy. Has anyone made any modifications to quiet these heat monsters?

Thats nothing - wait till you try the AC!

Not much that can be done - we just turn up the TV. I actually have a hard time sleeping with the noise.

Believe some of that quality noise will depend on where your furnace is in your unit. In our 2004 3295 it is under the curio cabinet, and yepper, it sounds like a jet engine during take off.

But, OntMont has a newer unit, 3670?? is that right John?? Anyway, not sure where his furnace is, but believe me, it is MUCHO quieter than ours. I could handle that quiet!

Most of the 3400's we have been in are much quieter as well.

Carol, the 3400 is quiet in the living area, but sounds like you are sleeping in the furnace up in the bedroom.

I notice Suburban now offers the variable speed fan which would have to help some with the noise. I suppose at least one of the 5er manufacturers will have to offer them as standard before the rest get on the bandwagon. Not much additional cost, but lots if you are replacing an already good - but noisy - furnace.

I finally took matters into my own hands and installed furnace filters. One on the back of the wooden fresh air vent and one sitting on top of the furnace itself. It serves two purposes. The one on the top of the furnace not only quiets the fan noise of the furnace, but filters some of the dust from getting into the furnace fan. The one behind the furnace vent, below the refrig, took some ingenuity to figure out how to fasten it to the back of the wooden vent, but with the two filters installed I have cut the decibel level to about half of what it was. Still not completely noise free, but more tolerable.

Seems to be a pretty much standard thing. You can get so that you don't notice it.

Just something to check, today I pulled the outside cover
off the furnace (outside, 4 phillips screws) and discovered that a couple of wing-nuts; one along the top mount of the box and the other holding the exhaust pipe length adjustment were very, very loose. Once they were tightened (I used a drop of loc-tite) it reduced some of the rattle when it's running. Not that it 'silenced' anything, but it removed one little noise coming from under the floor.
Now...on to the water pump and refrigerator...
