5.1 surround sound speakers in a 3455SA

Just took possession of a new 2011 3455SA and am trying to figure out if I really have all 6 of the surround sound speakers. I definitely have the subwoofer and 2 rear speakers, but the 2 front speakers and center speaker must be hidden behind the grill directly above the TV. If all 3 speakers are crammed in there, that's pretty dumb since the whole idea of the two front speakers in a 5.1 configuration is to separate them (as was done with the two rears). Or maybe they just installed the center speaker above the TV and didn't even bother to give me 2 front channels? Does anyone know how to get into the speaker space above the TV without damaging the woodwork to find out?

Yes,
It is behind the grill cloth. Just pry the cloth off with a dinner knife or a screw driver so as not to damage the woodwork. I moved them outside to the corners underneath the shelf. I left the center where it was. On the 2010, I had to move them for the sat receiver. The 2011 has a shelf.

Thanks, brenkco. That's where I was going to put a pair of front speakers myself, but didn't want to get in there and then find only one center speaker behind the grill. I was content to use a couple that I had here at home, but your solution is probably better.

I really need to stop reading the forum. Now I have another project for our 3455SA I took the grill off yesterday and found the 3 speakers and will move the L & R to the same location that brenkco described.

Ken,
What did you use to mount the speakers and how did attach them underneath the shelf? How did you route the wiring? Any descriptions and/or photos would be great! Thanks in advance.

Jack

Thanks guys, I'll move them tomorrow. I'll be waiting to get the answer to the wiring question.

Here is what I did.
First, I replaced the factory home theater system with a Samsung HT-C6600 for several reasons:
1. I wanted to run HDMI from the Sat receiver to the TV.
TV has 2 HDMI inputs but the problem was running the cable neatly
HT-C6600 unit has multiple HDMI inputs so I ran the Sat receiver into the home theater.
Then ran the HDMI out from the home theater to the TV
2. I wanted better speakers
3. New unit had a Blu-ray player
4. Factory unit kept shutting off, overload, heat problem
I found out later that the speaker wire for the subwoofer was damaged by the TV lift
I was able to replace with broken wire by fishing it in the wall, removing the a/c receptacle on the left side of tv (exposed outlet)

I removed the panel that housed the right, left and center speaker
I took the L brackets off the existing speakers and installed them on the new speakers
Drilled holes through bottom cabinet for wire and support bolt. Use large fender washer to support weight of speaker (see pic)
Drilled small hole to fish speaker wire to center cabinet (see pic)
Attached left and right front speaker (see pic)
Used hole saw and drilled hole from top shelf to left top cabinet to pass a/c cord for sat receiver and hard disk for DVR
Photo for sat receiver, center speaker and hard disk
Photo with grill cloth back on

Probably more info than you needed....hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Stu, did that answer the wiring question?

Ken,
Thanks for the quick reply!!!! That is just the info I needed and a photo is worth a thousand words I will stay with the stock system for the time being though. I had removed the housing on one of the speakers too in order to make sure I would not drill through the speaker when attaching the mounting bracket. I had thought about using an "L" bracket as you did or manufacturing a bracket from some scrap aluminum. I will try to remember to post a few photos when I am complete. Thanks again.

r,
Jack

Also check the rears. I matched the way they were attached

Well, I got the speakers moved and it was a pretty simple and straight forward job. I don't know if it is psychological or not, but the system sure sounds better to me now that there is some separation between the front speakers. Here is a link to an album at Photo Bucket with pictures and details of the relocation: Speaker Relocation. After finishing the fronts I inspected the rears and found one loose mounting screw and all 4 of the wire connections were just kind of "shoved" into there connection clips on the speakers. All is well now
