Adding a Hitch capable of towing a trailer```

Has anyone added a hitch capable of towing a trailer on a Montana that has the 4 inch bumper. If so, did you weld it or bolt it to the frame? Any information would be appreciated.

You don't state what year or model you have to put that hitch on. Some will support a hitch BUT you'd better check before putting one on the unit. Putting on a hitch may void the warranty for the frame from LCI or Lippert. I highly doubt if a bumper mount hitch would work if you are going to tow another trailer no matter how small it may be or how light it may be. I have seen some hitches put on that are welded onto the frame but most have been done by Lippert so the frame warranty is not voided.

I didn't get under there and look, but my empression when I saw one of the new rigs with that bumper was that the bumper would probably have to go to put a good hitch on.

If you're talking about the 4" sewer tube ... there's barely enough tube there to support the stinky slinky let alone anything else. I have the molded rear cap, but anyways, I welded up a hitch to tow my little squirt boat. I bolted it to the frame with six 1/2" bolts.
The gusseted post is a bike rack. I have seen the sewer tube with about a foot cut out of the middle and a hitch sticking in-between. There is enough length in each half for a sewer hose.

This is a key statement. Lippert states that they will void your warranty if you do it or have someone other than them do it but if THEY do it everything is OK. Why don't they just put a gun to your head and say "Give me your money and everything will be OK"?

Had one welded by a fabricator in Grand Rapids, Mi upon a recommendation from my dealer that is rated to pull 5,000 pounds. I use it for a cargo trailer with my motorcycle inside which is less than 2,500 total. It is on a 2013 Montana 3100RL and I waited until it was more than a year old and warranty would not be an issue.

I had a hitch welded to my frame, with the proper wiring set up to pull my 07' jeep. This local company REALLY knows how to do this right. I really do not know the jeep is back there other to look in the rear facing camera. If done correctly you should have no issues.

Happy Towing! Keith

Hey TexasBill - what did you end up installing. I have a 2016 3160RL also. Looking to install a tow hitch soon. Appreciate your reply.

Have a '14 3100RL. I bolted two 3 inch angles to the frame about three feet apart and bolted a receiver hitch to them. Bolted so it can come off if necessary but could be welded. Even with that, I would not put anything beyond a couple of bicycles on their rack on there.

I don't doubt you can add a hitch on the back of your camper that will pull anything you would like to pull. The problem isn't at the back of the camper it at the front. The frames in the front just aren't very strong. They are made thin up front to give us a lot of head room. I've seen lots of them broke up in the front but never one broke up in the back.
